I wasn't thinking yesterday in my beater doing just under 40 in a 30 thru a local camera
I thought this camera only does coming the other way but it definitely flashed me (twice).
Its a regular GATSO and theres only lines on the other side of the road coming the other way

So will I get done or did they just set it to flash on that side to scare people?

I think the radar just cuts across onto the other side of the road and caught you instead of other traffic going the other way. There's some discussion about whether this endorsable - I would guess at probably not, although you have just publicly admitted doing it.....

If it was an actual Gatso and was facing you then I think you'll be OK.If on the other hand it was a Truvelo then they do take photos from the front and don't have lines on the road. Was the camera on your side of the road?

Did it look like this:

or this:

Top one is gatso other is truvelo.
Doh....just read your post properly. You should be OK if camera was on other side of road, but even if there are no lines on the road I think the scameratti can put an overlay on the photo which will show them where the lines should be.

ok thats great hopefully I won't get done I have about 4 weeks till I have been driving 2 years and get my 6 point thing lifted, be a shame to mess it up now!

So can one GATSO do both ways? The other local camera that was one way has recently had lines painted on both sides of the road. I thought maybe they just did it to pretend as the lines on the new side are behind the camera?

Truvelos don't flash in the strobe-light fashion of Gatsos.
IINM, Gatsos have not been approved for forward-facing use, even though they will function that way.
Ergo, if the flashes were bright, it was a Gatso, and, if forward facing, invalid.

Gatso will flash with a bright white light, Truvelo will flash with a bright purplish / yellow light

it gets turned around regularly, but i believe it still just catches the rear shot?

Gatso = rear shot only.
Not type approved for forward facing shote.

The radar extends over both sides of the road and can be set to ignore oncoming traffic or to flash (not photograph) at a trip speed that may be different to that set for the rear shot. eg in a 30 might be set ot 35 (but could be lower) for traffic heading away from the gatso (photo, NIP, fine, etc) but at 40 for oncoming traffic (flash, or 2x flash to remind you).

Built into centre of road and turned to face one / other way? If you see the back of it then check your speed as you can get booked. If you see the face of it, then it's hitting drivers on the other carriageway.

It seems weird to me that the Gatso can be approved to shoot one way but not the other.
What are the issues with forward facing shots?

Not that I'm advocating using them in this way.eek

Bright flash in your face whilst driving in the dark not the best idea - perhaps ?

Western Cross Route, perchance?
