Right, this is a bit of a weird story, i've just got in but I want your opinion on it.
I was riding my BMX through Salford very fast, if you want to call me a chav without knowing the area then do so. i went round a corner and clipped a girl which I am 100% responsible for, but on doing so an unmarked black focus pulled up next to me. I immediately went to the aid of the girl, although unhurt I ofered her money for a taxi and anything else she might want. She seemed to understand my situation and wasnt too bothered. The 'police man' in the focus insisted I got out of there immedieately, but I said 'how do I know your any more of a police man than me' he said he didnt need to show a badge and we eventually agreed to both wait for her boyfriend to show up and take her home.
Now what I want to know is, would an off duty police man carry I.D. at all times, because even though I'm a bit pissed things didnt add up.
P.S. Feel free to rip the shit out of me for being pissed, and riding a bike on the pavement.

if they claim to be BiB then I think it fair to expect them to carry warrant card and show it when asked.
I'm pretty sure as a soldier we had to carry our ID 24x7 and show when asked, cant see BiB been different.
for what it worth Good on ya for sticking about and offering assistence.

To sum things up, the guy in the focus wanted me to get out of there but without him showing me some I.D. i wasnt going to, hence the waiting for her boyfriend.
I think that is a wise decision.
Had he been plod I suspect you would have got nicked for riding on the pavements, and drunk in charge of a vehicle. That he didn't bother with any of that makes me wonder if he was a perv looking for an easy target.

I agree with this! Don't think he was really a policeman.
Despite your drunken state, did you manage to get the car's registration? Report him maybe?

It is well known that BiB should carry their card 24/7, in reality this does not always happen. In this case as you were not sure was best to wait. It can do no harm.
However just because the individual can not produce a warrant card does not mean he/she is not a police officer or can undertake a police role.

Sorry but I for one would not take someones word as proof.
Thats fine and down to situation/circs and your perception. Just saying that they can still do the job even without in case any one thinks they cant :-)

Exapain to me why anyone should listen to someone who claimed to be an officer but could not produce a warrant card?

Chuckle...it will depend on circs I would have thought? I hate "what if situations"...but say your getting the crap beaten out of you and someone comes to your assistance, helps you out and then states he is a police officer.. you can not believe him if you wish thats your choice but he is still doing his/her job even if he/she can not produce a warrant card :-)

If coming to my aid I wouldn't care if he was plod or not.
However, if attempting to order me to do something which doesn't make logical sense, I would expect him to produce a card. I wouldn't take orders/instructions from anyone else they can prove they are plod.
For example, on the Tube in Prague a chap stopped us and asked to see our train tickets. I was about to tell him where to go when he showed me his ID (he was plain clothes).. I decided as I caught sight of his waist mounted pistol to show him my ticket...:d

Thats why I say it depends on the circs. In this reported incident the individual was not happy to leave...thats fine. I only posted to say an officer can still do the job regardless of a warrant card...it also does not stop the officer issuing instruction/advice/action. Again its down to the individual how they deal with that. I would have thought?
I,m lost folks. The op's point has been well answered but where do you guys get the idea that a warrant card should be carried at all times even off duty?
I,m also former armed forces and have never heard of an off duty soldier having to carry his MOD 90.
There are no instructions on either of these. Is this local legend or another English thing I don't know about?

Cheers for the replys guys, I thought I'd get more of a slating for running someone over on a bmx! Thinking about it since i'm pretty sure he wasnt police, but considering the area I wouldnt blame him for saying so. I think the girl seemed grateful that I stayed, although I was being an idiot we were both students and the other guy seemed a bit of a creepy old guy.
BTW- I cant remember if he said badge or card or whatever, that was just what I wrote in my drunken first post.

You berk, riding a bike on the pavement when pi55ed, you want lockin up you do.
Is that enough or shall I come back later when I'm pi55ed.
(you did say we could have a pop at you)
First of all .. riding bicycle on pavement ist a big
of biggy biggest orders.
Riding a bicycle whilst drunk . that ist also against the law und you should have been prosecuted for this.
But back to your story... we did read in Manchester press two years ago that someone in Salford was given a two year jail term for "pretending to be police und issuing on the spot "fines" .. which some numpties actually paid
But whether or not this guy was real BiB und just did not have warrant card "handy" ... let us just hope he put sufficient "angst" in you not to et drunk und ride bike und try to get girlfriend by running over her und doing the Sir Galahad thingy.
I speak as red blooded woman .. you need to "woo" better than that
