Has anyone come across these before?

It is a video camera, which is attached to the front or rear screen of your car, and continually records on a 30 second loop. If you are involved in an accident which generate sufficient g force it saves the last recording and notes your location using its in build GPS. Apparently the Images recorded are admissible as evidence.

I have seen some of the footage from what seems to be very similar units sold in the US.
They are indeed used in insurance cases. Theones I have seen not only have an outside facing camera, but also one pointing towards the driver.
I think there is a veiled motive here too. The front facing view was quite limited, and of course is only useful if someone crashes into you from the front. IMHO the reason why insurers in the US are promoting their use is becasue of the drivers camera. The footage I saw was of the driver on the phone, nodding off, looking around at the kids in the back shortly followed by the car shaking and the aftermath of the drivers car hitting another object!
