Due to money issues, I intend to re-tax my car online more or less at the end of the month. Therefore, the tax disc won't arrive for a few days after the old one runs out. If I don't drive the car anywhere, nor keep it on the public highway, am I committing an offence? Common sense says no, but you never know with this government.

Can't see why - off road , so it can't get picked up by ANPR. DVLA have record of VED being paid on time. So it's legal-NO LAPSE IN VED. Had similar problem with my new car - bought un taxed - couldn't tax till insurance arrived - 3/4 days later - then taxed on 15th of month- no nasty letters.YET.

Why not use the old fashined cheque over the counter at a Post Office? Yes it's a bit of a pain the a*se to dig out the insurance cert and MOT, and queue, but you get an instant tax disc and the cheque will take at least 3 days to clear, longer if the post office is lazy about getting it to the bank. And then it doesn't matter if you have to use the car.

Theoretically, if you pay online it should also take 3 days to clear by BACS (two working days and then clear on the third) but online payments seem to be less predictable than cheques.

just a thought - but check everything's in place to get your disk ordered online before the post offices close on the last day.
You should be able to verify eligibility before purchase - and would hate you to find that, eg: your insurance company or the MoT'er has made an admin. error - leaving you in the lurch at the last minute.
I'm not saying that it's ever happenned - just silly to fall foul of an automatic law because of someone else's mistake.

You could always sorn it if the details fall through at the last minute.

They are separate offence to not have and not display, but I don't know of anyone getting done for not displaying who has (and has a good excuse).
