Who do I see about getting a speed camera put in?
Discussion
Since I've moved to the front of the house rather than the back when working from home, I've noticed that there are a small but significant number of people who seem to think it is acceptable to rag their crappy little chavmobiles down the street at stupidly high speeds. I've just watched a guy go past flat out changing in to 3rd!
This is a quiet (in theory) residential street. It's maybe a third of a mile long, with a T junction onto a main road at one end, a T junction onto another residential road at the other, and a roundabout halfway (no roads off it, just there to allow turning I guess), so you really have to make a concerted effort to get up to those sorts of speeds!
We've got 8 kids under 10 just in the 6 houses closest to us. If we have to have Blair's cameras at all, who do I see about getting one of them put in my road? I'm seriously considering building a dummy one myself! I wonder if I could get it to flash at speeding cars?

You are absolutely right, but this is precisely the problem with cameras. They are not used where they are needed, only where they make money. The people responsible should be jailed. And the police only want to collect fines from those who will pay. Do you think that they are going round to knock up some noxious little git who probably isn't even insured? Not a chance - they might get hurt.
It is a national problem and it is worth pursuing. Write to your local Chief Constable, your councillor, MP or MEP, goodness knows that we're not short of representation. Claim your human rights are being breached, because they are.
All the best with it.

We had the same problem in our road. It should be 20mph on such streets. After 3 years, we got speed humps. It hasn't slowed down the feeble-minded, but it better than nothing.
I did think about some 'direct action', but my motor is parked out front & has already been targeted once.
I though about a bouncing ball out from between the parked cars when the cretins zoom down the road. I doubt they'd:
a - see it
b - stop
Sympathy to you.

No - lot of the time it's not their car/van , but it's your car that has to drive over these daily.(bit like turkeys and xmas)
Agree it should be slower - we've got bumps (we didn't ask -we got ) --sort of a chalenge to the passing chavs.
Cure would be lots of luverly Trafpols paying visits to those areas and doing nerds for DD( or educating them),not the SCP earning cash( if they could hide van) or the local council setting up tank traps to cost the residents .But then since the speed freeks got in , euthanasia has set in amongst Trafpols.
And in the words of our last CBO Sgt"carefull what you ask for -most folk we catch speeding are residents"

Okay, for this you will need:
1) a Large Cuddly dog toy.
2) a Large Bag of cement.
3) a small bucket of water
4) a wheelbarrow
5) a stanley knife
6) a roll of fabric style sticky back plastic.
7) a trowel.
Fill wheelbarrow with cement and water and mix with trowel.
Take the knife and cut open the cuddly toy. (Get help from a grown up) Then empty it out.
Fill with the cement mixture and seal with sticky tape.
Leave to dry for a week in the wheel barrow.
Once dry place carefully in the middle of the road and go to bed.

I've heard about residents parking on opposite sides at intervals down the road to make it difficult to drive a straight line - maybe that's a possibility for a couple of weeks?
The CPZ on roads near my mum's house enforces that kind of parking (three one side, three the other), it's kind of 50/50 between sorting some of the drivers out, but making others treat it like some kind of slalom event. Once, we saw an impressive car wreck outside someone's house; the woman who owned the car came out to talk to us, and apparently someone had lost it big time while trying to drive "sportily" around the parked cars.
Uninsured, naturally.

I love it!
I live in a village with a 40 limit and by far the worst offenders are HGV's, I see 18 wheelers coming through flat out everyday. I even resorted to calling a local haulage company and having a word with the operations manager. I am not a NIMBY and I keep to the limit in villages (NSL's are fare game
) but HGV's plowing through villages flat out is
The village muppets in XR2's etc are just beyond hope and are probably sans licence and insurence anyway so no camera will help (unless you up root it and stick it down their throats).

You want to PUT a scamera IN??? Well.........i have heard it all now!! all this will do is let the boy racers go to another street, it will just move the problem it wont stop them, and it could also encorage vandles to come into your street to break it!!! And then you do 31mph and get 3 points and a fine - Brill

Normally I would agree, but I think I should maybe expand a little further... These are not kids coming here specifically to blat up and down our street. At the risk of being shamed by association
... these are people who actually live either on our road or the one that crosses the top of it. It's always the same few people, and our road is near enough a cul-de-sac - you certainly wouldn't drive down it to get to anywhere else. These tossers clearly drive like this everywhere, so if I could stop them doing it on my street, I wouldn't feel as though I was moving the problem elsewhere, just stopping it here. Of course if I did actually try for an official complaint, I'd stand sod all chance of getting a camera put in, but that won't stop me thinking about it! My preferred option would be an LED display panel that can detect anyone travelling over the limit and flash up a message along the lines of "You... the driver of CHA 111 V... stop driving like a weapons grade nob end and slow down! There's children around here, and you're making yourself look stupid in front of them". I reckon that would do the job. Anyone know anything about electronics?
On a more serious front, I will try local government and the MP, see where that gets me.

As posted by me -
And in the words of our last CBO Sgt"carefull what you ask for -most folk we catch speeding are residents"
And as posted by me ,and also suggested by others --"We need more POLICE " - BLOKES AND BLOKESSES who can actually do something (Must take a pic of one on the beat, to give to my Grandkids) - not estate wardens/dogcatchers/ litter wardens or PVCSO who at best can fine dogs (or their owners ) for a deposit on the pavement.
Forget Humps/bumps/cameras / PC (unless wearing uniform) rubbish -can someone please change the battery in Tony' hearing aid
