Attended Northallerton Court today for my speeding offence.......

I was clocked at 117.9mph on the M1 last July.

Panic sent in this morning when my solicitor didn't turn up & I had to represent myself!!!

I think I got off very lightly.....

28day Ban
£200 Fine
£45 Court Costs

Any thoughts

If there are no points added to that tally, you've had a superb result (Back in 1995 I received a fourteen day ban AND 6 points for the one offence).

I'd suggest it may be worth taking a cheapo last minute foreign holiday, thus lessening the impact further.

The penalty could have been worse, but arbitrary speed limits remain pernicious and oppressive.

Write to your MP, demand their abolition.

My thought is why would Northallerton Court be dealing with a speeding offence on the M1 ?

As far as i can remember the M1 stops a fair way before North Yorkshire

Good result mate, do you need your car for work, or did you just present yourself well?

I was stopped at 117mph on the A66 dual carraigeway in County Durham one early morning in 1998. I got exactly the same punishment.

Good result

The thing that bugs me is the inconsistancy of magistrates, I got a 56 day ban and £230 fine for doing 115mph on the 3 lane stretch of the A23 about 1/2 mile before it becomes the M23! mad

One thought. Play hell with the solicitor for not turning up. They have done you a serious disservice and unless they've a damn good reason I'd not be happy about being left high and dry on my own in court.

Other than that, all things considered, a "good" result.

Here are my thoughts: your solicitor is an idiot of the highest order. Failing to turn up for a criminal trial is an absolute no-no and the Law Society will step on him pronto.
He has indemnity insurance, so I would give him one chance at paying you hefty compensation for failing to represent, then report him.
The Law Society will compell him to compensate you, particularly as you have been banned.
Good result?
I don't consider that being banned, fined and ordered to pay costs to a court that you have already paid towards through both your income tax and council tax a good result.
You were travelling at a speed that most traffic officers do every single day on each shift several times with complete safety.
Why should you be prosecuted for that?

That's impressive speed for the M1-A1, the surface is hardly a billiard table! It's hard to keep it in the lane at 70mph Southbound past Temple Newsam, it's a real rollercoaster!

[VHMode]Because the OP isn't a police officer with the necessary exemptions in law?[/VHMode]

There's a section of the "new bit" that's lovely (not far south of Dishforth) despite there being two sweeping bends I've seen cars doing well in excess of 120mph (not mine though, nor any I was in). If you're struggling to keep a car in a lane at 70mph...thats not good, but not something I've experienced- although I dont drive the stiffest cars on the road!

The solicitor not turning up did you a favour
what defense yarn did you spin to the court
I need to bank it for future use.
