I was talking to a fellow worker earlier in the car and he picked me up on my speed and asked me whether I take risks that would have the same consequences. He wasnt talking about the risk to our lives but the risk to my job/family if I lost my licence. Anyone else ever think about it like that or do you just not think about it?

I'm just curious.

We all take all sort of risks every day of our lives. Sensible people take appropriate action to mitigate the risk to what is for them an acceptable level. ( including the risks you describe ) Numpties, safety nazis and sad misguided people like those who presently inhabit Rospa et al really truly believe that all risks can be eliminated.

I think that most people think they drive safely according to the road conditions and that the speed limits are too low etc... The reality is if they were all right in this assumption we would never have and RTAs. I don't always stick to speed limits, however there are areas where I will make sure that I am within the speed limit simply because I know that they are higher risk areas from the number of incidents I have passed there. That way if I get caught up in something I can at least be sure it wasn't due to my innapropriate use of speed, on other occasions when I am speeding I never go overboard and tend to be more alert to the traffic around me, in case I get pulled. On average I try to maintain a speed of no more than 20% greater than the limit allows.
