A friends 15 year old daughter would ideally like to work in the mounted (horse) division of the Met. I've run through the websites to see if any decent information might come up - it doesn't really.

Whilst there are unlikely to be any mounted officers reading this Forum, would anyone be able to give her some simple advice on her best route to this dream job?

Thanks....

I applied for mounted section.....too big.. grumpy

Anyway, to join the mounted section or any other specialised unit a police officer has to do their 2 years probation on the streets following passing out of training.

Everyone has to do this, even the Chief Constable. It provides a good grounding. Old gits like me think you have to do at least 5 years of front line policing before specialising....but that's not the 'pc' answer, as equal opportunities state that after 2 years everyone is eligible.

The mounted section is a good place to be, especially if you like horses nuts It's a good job.

(even though they wouldn't get me a carthorse. grumpy) )

From what I understand everyone has to do their 2 years on the street probation before they can apply to transfer into a more specialist role. The Met is also a bugger to get into - I'm attempting a slight back way in via the BTP but I guess will have to wait and see if this is possible.
My best mates sister went into the Met about 6 years ago - like your daughter she is mad on horses and initially went in with this in mind but there are sooo many other opportunities for her in the force now.
She actually went for a totally different role and is currently a member of S019 (I think thats the team), is fully firearms trained and is regularly on the diplo team outside Downing street.

You have to fit the horses that are in stock- not the other way round!

I am probably incorrect .. but like the sniffer dogs .. I think the horses had another career themselves before joining the police. But as someone said above .. I think there are so many career opportunities to follow in today's police force und all will enthuse und offer job satisfaction in any case.

My older sister trained to be a vet because she loved animals. She has a very soft spot for horses in particular so ist very well suited to place she practises in.. which also takes in some vet work at the local horse race meets in the area where her practice ist located.. where she work as "duty local vet" on rota.

That's odd ... I am 15 stone - and also got told forget mounted branch. I think it is a case of apply quickly if you join the job and are under the weight limit as after a few more years of police 'life' there is absolutely no chance of being under 14 st

There were no doubt people already in the job saying exactly that when everyone of us joined, but we still did join. It doesn't ever appear to have got better either, only worse if you listen to what everyone says.

Must of have been decent job in 1829 though.

Apparently when warrant no 000002 joined warrant no 1 coined the phrase "The Job's F....D!"

Getting back onto thread your friend really needs to join with an open mind about where her career will take her, not set her heart on a specialization within the force before she has left school.

Mounted branch is a very sought after job. A colleague of mine spent the first ten years of her career trying to get in. She had to provide lots of evidence of experience of Public Order duty (Shield Training, Football, Demos) before she was finally accepted. The equitation course at Imber Court is 18 weeks long. The job itself involves many long days. (eg.4 hours kitting up - 4 hours at football - 4 hours de-kitting) It is predominantly Public Order related work. She did it for three years before getting stripes and becoming a mum.

I have heard recently that it is one of the few departments in the Met that is over subscribed with women which means female applicants are no longer greeted with open arms!

You cannot go straight into a specialist department like this. You need to want to be a copper first, become one, and then get good at it! Being realistic your friend is at least a decade away from an equitation course.

The Army have horses too. She would probably get one quicker with them.
