If someone were only to discover today that the road tax had expired on their car on the last day of December 2006 yikes and the said person had been driving the car for the last two months totally oblivious to the above, how would that person go about re-taxing the car (bearing in mind the form for renewing the tax specifically asks if the vehicle has been used on the road during the period between the road tax expiring and the application for renewal ?

To further complicate the issue, the "idiot" who failed to notice the tax on the vehicle had expired, may also have failed to notify DVLC of the change of address when they moved house. (thus any letters notifying the owner of the vehicle that his/her car had been seen being used/parked on the public highway without a current tax disc, would not have been received........)

Any ideas ?

Difficult to understand how the circumstance could arrive, however get the appropriate tax form and complete it letting your conscience answer the question

I did a simular thing when I first started driving, hadn't noticed that the taxed car I bought had the Tax taken out before I picked it up to get a refund I guess!
When I noticed a couple of months later I just applied at the post office and back dated it till the day I bought it!

If your spouse bought the car they would need to tax the car from the day they bought it.

go to the post office with your docs and tell them you need to tax your vehicle from (date two months ago) no forms to fill - you'll need to get them to send your V5 off anyway with the correct address on

you've probably been fined by now but they'll also want back tax so if you pay for it now at least you're showing willing

good luck

You will need to 'declare' the previous use. Failure to do so is a serious offence that can lead to an HMP holiday. So pay back duty to start of this year if old one expired 31.12.06.

Be aware that DVLA do a monthly computor check for vehicles that have not renewed after a month - 6 weeks and if no SORN notification they lob out a £80 fine. Guess there could be a nasty at your old address.

If you write a letter to the DVLA explaining the situation along with the tax application, they may well cancel the SORN fine.
