Anyone seen one of this new breed? M1 J41 N this morning, fully liveried up Volvo S70 estate with yellow roof lights (like HATO). BDV on the side.

Just what we need more plastic police!

Do you not see what is going on?

Look at France or Spain.

3 tiers of the police in each country.

Policing is expensive. Why pay and train all the police to a high level when certain priorities do not require that level of training or expertise.

Have a system where risk, pay and training are seperated into graded levels of responseto requirement and you will save heaps of cash!

1. You have local Police in France who deal with minor public nuisance issues, parking, traffic direction and other trivial stuff.

2. You have the National police who deal with more serious crime and investigations.

3. You have specialist services such as the French version of the FBI dealing with National and International situations and crime related to that.

In GB we now have

1. Neighbourhood wardens and PCSO's who have limited powers and less training. incorporated into that are the motorway and major routes HATO organisation

2. The Police dealing with lower level to medium level crime

3. SOCA dealing with National and International crime.

Its purely about money and needs

Nothing!

Just expect to be dealt with by more and more people who are trained to a lower level to do specific tasks and with less powers.

Mostly I hear that 'people' want more police.

They are actually not getting more police, just more policing by less qualified people!

Still, the tax payer are the people who benefit in the long run

Ok for those who need this cleared up.
Its not the police, hato or anything like that at all.It is actually BDV Breakdown services. It is there own car that they use in motorway roadworks to drive around in and spot breakdowns.

Not a problem. They have to have a spotter car to look for the breakdowns as recovery agents like the aa rac etc are not insured or allowed to stop in long term roadwork areas or it may be that the road side emergancy phones do not work hence the spotter vehicle. You will often see these out and about in road works that have free recovery signs up.

I thought they had cameras in roadworks to spot breakdowns? Failing that, MoP are pretty quick at calling in anything slowing down their progress. Seems like a waste of money as the vehicle doesn't sound like it's capable of recovery?

They have them as not all roadworks have cameras or cameras that can cover the whole area. Also even when there are cameras they have to rely on people watching them properly which does not always happen. Therefore they have these vehicles. How are they a waste of money when they are supplied and driven by the breakdown people who then phone up for there truck to come out.

Exactly
Like the 4x4 highways agency 'patrolling' the motorways...
NO STATUTORY POWERS, nor ARE THEY EXEMPT FROM ANY ROAD TRAFFIC ACT laws/regs
just more useless unwanted clutter on the roads!

What is all that about?? Beggers belief this country sometimes!!

Fair point about the cameras not being "all seeing".
I'm just thinking the public will phone in first?

Hello all. I'm new to the site and a serving Police Sergeant in a midlands county force. I have only recently discovered the site and want primarily to have as much fun on the roads when I'm not working as I can. I am as bewildered and frustrated at the way that the current government has constantly persecuted the motorist. I am also extremely proud of never issuing a speeding ticket to anyone other than some scrote with no insurance/MOT and four bald tyres. These are the guys I have always been after getting off the road. NOT the average Joe who is just maybe a bit over enthusiastic with his right foot from time to time!!
With regard to the Motorway police, in my area this is done By the Central Motorway Police Group (CMPG), who are assisted by VOSA. VOSA are the guys you see in the 4x4's who are employed as just a cheaper resource to deal with accidents etc.
As for PCSO's, they are just about as useful as an inflateable dart board!! I'm just glad I don't have to supervise any of them on my team!!!
I hope to enjoy this site. Us coppers are pretty normal (well some of us anyway)!
I hope to be able to paint an honest picture of what we do over the coming months. Whilst I remember, keep 'em peeled for a greeny/blue plain Volvo when you are on Midlands motorways along with a black Scoda Octavia. Forwarned is Forearmed!!!
Enjoy the roads, where you can!!!!

Welcome to the site sarge, but can I just add a wee note of caution to your obviously candid remarks.
Big brother is watching.

Just a quick one the people in 4x4's are highways agency traffic officers.Vosa use mainly ford galaxys and do not deal with accidents they deal with checking vehicles and are sometimes called out to rtc's to check vehicles over.
