What is the speed limit when towing on a motorway?
I was under the impression it was 60 MPH?
Just that yesterday i clocked a 4x4 (no surprise then) towing
a trailer (empty) on the M6 southbound at 88 mph....
It was bobbling slightly (probably as there was no weight on it)...a tad unnerving when passing. Good old Cheshire Police saw it and did nothing....
Just how fast do you have to do with a trailer to get pulled? If the limit is 60 mph then 88mph is 28 mph over the limit.....
If i went past Mr tank top Cheshire police in Volvo Shoe box doing 28 mph over the 70 mph in my 80K car.....(98 moph) am sure the horns would sprout and he'd be after me.....

I have had dealings with various aspects of the Police - accident, speeding, assault, theft etc, so feel well equipped to comment.

The chap is arrogant and thinks he is better than everyone. Well he needs to learn that just as you earn money does not mean your clever. His spelling should show that. He is rude and arrogant but we should remember that its because of over paid IT consultants that we all sleep safe at night. I can only thank my stars one of them turned up at the crash two officers went to and bravely pulled a petrol soaked vicitm from his car... oh hold on no he was in his office.
WAKE UP people work in the emergency services from a variety of backgrounds I know officers who have given up high paid jobs to work as a police officer. You are very rude and here purely to create arguments and agitate. I'm no longer interested.

at the way this thread has progressed....but in answer to your original query, yes, the max limit for a vehicle towing a trailer is 60 mph on a motorway and they're not allowed into the outside lane. Speeding by type, I think, would be the offence.
However, I have travelled at more than the speed limit on the motorway on several occasions in various cars and haven't been stopped either. The chap you saw with the trailer was being a touch daft, (even though as long as the trailer was well maintained there's no mechanical reason why those sort of speeds aren't sustainable) but it happens everyday without consequence and certainly shouldn't impede your enjoyment of your car.
