Heading along the A14 from M1/M6 interchange and notice a silver Astra on an overhead bridge setting up two cameras on poles - looked like time/distance units but assumed they were traffic flow gathering.

5 miles or so down the road noticed a further 2 cameras, again mounted on poles above each lane.

I was on the level speed wise so no drama but made me wonder, are there mobile SPECS units in operation outside roadworks etc? There were no signs indicating scamera zone or similar.

Isnt it a legal requirement/guideline to publish SPEED CAMERAS signs etc before the areas with the actual cameras? I'm sure there have beena few legal cases pertaining to this?

No. Non adherence to the rules means the SCPs can't net off from that site.

This would be a first. The problem is that the units are mobile, so how could they assure the distance used in the speed calculation for such a system?

I suspect what you saw must have been something else.
