Walking to the station this morning I noticed a white Smart Car with speed camera stickers on the front and side. 'Fair enough' I thought as I walked past...that was until I gave it another look. The Smart had a camera on the rear parcel, assumingly catching people speeding?

Now I'm not usually one to moan about all this, and it was parked near a school, but a Smart Car is hardly fair game is it? There were no highy visible stickers to see of you were approaching the Smart, just a 'Camera Enforcement' Sticker that was half covered in dirt.

This was in Sidcup, so just be careful if you're based around there

Sympton of the State gone (or going) mad!

How many new Text books for the local schools would that have bought?
How many extra hours of Nursing overtime would that have paid for?
Would that have helped the homeless?
Maybe gone towards a newer more capabable ambulance?

These are used in London to catch people breaking no right/no left turn rules and the like, not speeding. Is there a restricted junction, bus lane or something like that nearby that they could have been monitoring?

Just so we are clear. S CP 's are self funding they don't take money from the rest of the tax pot. They do generate income which could be used to go elsewhere in the tax pot but I am not sure whether they do or not. I think that's in discussion elsewhere

Not a bad idea posting them near schools...but they should be monitoring
dodgy sex offenders hanging around? AS i seem to remember a number of high
profile cases..where offenders let out into the community go an re-offend

I'm aware that we're covered by Met Police, but it wasn't a Police operated vehicle, like any safety camera partnership. And geography doesn't alter the fact that Bexley (or Sidcup in this instance) is in the county of Kent. I feel we've digressed somewhat...

Simon
I agree with yr original posting.
However on this particular vain of Piston Heads you will encounter (not entirely though)
a very blinkered and biased view of the subject that your post was originally addressing!

A useful post

That is a possibilty as there are zig zag lines restricting parking near the school. But there is also a speeding issue round there too.

My point in posting was that when you say Kent in your post you gave the impression it was in relation to the force who may be using that vehicle. I was clarifying so that people in chatham, ashford etc would not be looking out for the vehicle. Not in an effort to be blinkered etc as some people are not always aware of whom covers what.

Bexley is a London Borough, and when I lived there it was in Greater London, and the London Borough of Bexley was the local council.

Bexley are using the Smart Cars to catch peeps who use bus lanes, bus stops, park where they shouldn't etc etc

It was in the New Shopper about 6 months ago

They are council run cars so I don't think they're gonna be doing those who speed!
