I would like to say a big thank-you to a couple of Boys in Blue that I met in central London the other week. There I was walking past, and then down the side of the "Apple" store near Hamleys's. My wife and I were heading back to our car and I noticed a dark Blue Vectra parked in the side road we were walking down.

The front wheels were turned to the kerb and I notice the tyre was almost slick. then as I carried on walking I noticed the back one was too. I walked behind it and realised there wasn't a legal tyre on the whole car! (this really narks me off as i alsways think it's unfair that people get away with this type of thing)

Then, as luck would have it, a Police Astra pulled up next to me in the waiting traffic trying to move onto the main road. So i stepped over and gentley knocked on the window. The man inside then wound it down.

"Excuse me officer, I was wondering if you could help me. Is there anything you can do about this car. Only it has four bald tyres on it?"

"Yes there is Sir, we'll take a look"

He pulled over to the kerb, him and his colleague got out with their ticket book and promptly went to town on this rolling liability. Probably cost more in fines that the car was worth I reckon!

Really did make my Sunday afternoon! Many thanks!

Indeed. It would seem a shame though if their hard work was undone because the car wasn't registered as the driver could reasonably not expect to get caught in the age of policing by scamera.

ETA on a more positive note, hopefully they picked up it wasn't registered and it went straight to the great crusher in the skycloud9

I'm sure the car would also be stuck with a producer and flagged on APNR pending production

I hope he wathces for suspicious people in his area. Personaly speaking I wish more people would deal with vehicles in poor states of repair. Four slick tyres would suggest a lot of other problems like no insurance etc or a general bad attitude to driving. So well done to the OP and the officers who dealt with it.

I too am a bit of a tyre watcher, strange fetish I know. I once spotted bare canvas on the tyres of my Dentist's volvo! I went straight back in to the surgery and mentioned it. All sorted next time!

Are you happy that someone is driving around on what sound like racing slicks in March?

the whole ing problem with this country is the walk on by attitude of many - anti social behaviour (including driving illegal vehicles) is the scourge of this country - fair play to the OP for making a stand.

Glad to see that 'sensible' is the majority rule on this thread.

If an uninsured, bald tyre'd, no MOT holding, mechanically sub standard vehicle, hit you because it couldn't stop on a damp road, you'd get the arse about it!

Why should anyone have the right to endanger someone elses life because they can't be bothered to have a road legal car.

Mr average keeps their car in a 'fit' condition, it's a basic responsibility of owning a car.

I would say 'Lager lout' is the ideal login for you. Welcome to PistonHeads......

If I spot a car with bald tyres or other obvious defects and I've got nothing better to do (not often!) I'll happily sit up on it for 15 mins or so, especially if it's crashed parked. It's so much more rewarding dealing with these things face to face.

Especially for someone who got handed a 30 month driving ban for drink driving, at least there is no irony lost there.....
