Police 'will have trouble' setting up a speed trap
Discussion
Right, crying shame I have had to do this but i see no alternative at the moment.
Had to go to the police station this morning to ask them if they would kindly do something about the idiots on the road where my g/f's parents live. The road in question is in sunny Spalding and its a main(ish) street through one part of the town, it can get quite busy. Anyway i'm walking down the path next to this road (30mph limit, cycle lanes, houses and pavements either side) about 8pm and all i can see and hear is idiot boy racers looning down there at stupid speeds, and even overtaking and racing each other down this road. Seriously, its getting absolutely ridiculous and these stupid t**ts in their plastic cars do not give a sh*t.
So i'm sat in the future in-laws house and all you can hear going past every 5 mins or so all night is f**kin idiots racing each other and looning down this road. So i think to myself, sod this i'm gonna go a see what the bibs will say.
Went into the station this morning and asked them if they could set up a bit of monitoring for a few evenings, speed guns if required (i feel this is one of the few places where they are needed) and even failing that some trafpol so atleast witness the idiots racing and overtaking so they can be pulled for this.
Bib response 'oh yeah, we were actually down there the other night, only got one ticket, trouble is its a straight road and they can see us' etc etc. But the best bit came after I asked about a speed trap 'well we would do that but there can only be one car on the road, its actually quite difficult for us to catch them speeding on that road, its a lot of trouble for us' etc etc etc.
My response involved me saying fair enough then, but at least witness the dangerous driving. I also mentioned to the bib that on my journey in to Spalding the other day I had witnessed good ol Lincs (Safety)Speed Scam Partnership's favourite little speed van clocking traffic on the wide open A17!!! I asked why this van is out there on a main road, with no pedestrians or houses around, clocking lorries and cars for doing 65mph. All I got was shrugged shoulders.
Fair play to the officer though, he did agree with my comments and he said they will sort something out one night this week or next.
So there you have it people, speed cameras and guns aren't gonna be used in places where there is a risk, its all down to the revenue and easy targets they can pull in.

Now there's a surprise.....
You would be better approaching the SCP to do this. I would not task an officer (whom I have very few of) to sit on a road all day. It would only ever solve the problem short term as being the location it is people will only obey the limit whilst enforcement is present. I hate to say it but traffic calming is the long term solution. The cost to local police against benefit gained does not work. SCP's are self financing and as such one or two tickets would pay for the enforcement. The local police would be taking officers away from other duites.
Hope this helps a little? You could video the action and submit to local plod and they may consider dealing via other offences.

All good common sense. But, a fatal flaw - the cameras are there to make money, not *stop* people speeding. Of course, if that were the case they would flash up a warning that there wa a laser operator a mile ahead so that when the speeding driver passes the accident blackspot they would do so at below the speed limit.
Completely agree with your sentiments though.
In other words do the job of the police...
Sorry but it really winds me up, I know the police are under resourced but two nights of heavy presence issuing tickets for everything would stop them for a while. Not the fault of the plod officers I know but is it any wonder people have no respect for the work the police do, ignoring glaringly obvious problems and just fobbing people off.
I can just imgaine how far a tape of offending cars would get if one were to be given to the police, 2ft to the nearest bin.

For christs sake, don't give the damned SCP any opportunity to crow about speeding. Agree with the traffic calming measures though, these don't work everywhere but on a straight bit of road in a town or village, it's the way to go. Contact your local councillor and MP

The officers have spent time there. So you advocate taking probably half a night shift (many towns have 2-4 officers on) overnight to issue speeding tickets when in this same thread there are probably overnight crimes etc that are not being attended. Its not a usefull way to deal with it. It provides enforcement only when present. In fact they only managed one ticket.
If you send the video in the right way via an Area Commander and it has the same cars clearly driving in a certain manner etc again and again then it will get dealt with. You just have to create an audit trail.
The only long term solution is traffic calming.
[quote-mr annie vxr]The only long term solution is traffic calming.[/quote]
And our survey said....enn-euuurgh.
The long term solution is more police on the streets, more patrols around residential and industrial neighbourghhoods, not pen pushers and managers.
The reason kids like this know they can get away with it is because they know there is no local police on the streets.
It's a nuisance now, but what happens when someone gets hit by these kids? It will take a lot more resource than it would spend sending the busies down for a night and handing out tickets.
Why do we think we can police by CCTV and home video? It places the householder at risk of assault if detected by the scrotes. Where is the proof of who is driving at that time?
Shouldn't we be preventing car crime in the first place? Where are the after school clubs/youth centres for these kids to go to, where are the YTS schemes and young apprenticeships to give them legal outlet for their love of cars?
The way I see it is that the Police don't own the streets anymore - it is the chavs, the untouchable youth of the noughties that do.

But this question is not about car crime. Its about kids racing down a stretch of road. A stretch of road they will continue to race down all the time there is no enforcement present. Its local so any officers turning up will soon be flagged for everyone to know. To ensure 24 hr a day effective speed control its traffic calming I am afraid.
I won't disagree that we need more police but the reality is no-one wants to pay anymore than they do so that is not going to happen not in the next year or 5 years.
Given the means and a judiciary that can effectively punish criminals hell even just effective crime punishment crime and anti social behaviour would be dramaticaly reduced. Instead there is currently no effective punishment and as such each little chav crim creates loads more every time they see crime one get away with it.
I hate traffic calming but sometimes it does work. As long as your not driving fast it really should not bother aynone.

So what is it you suggest the local police do to stop the cars racing along here 24/7? As I have said they can do selective enforcement but that will not resolve the problem. Its whats known as a holistic approach it form part of arranging diverity projects such as youth clubs or training schemes or football teams. The police are a small part of the picture. We only deal with people after they have gone through the school system the social service system and finally they fall into our laps. By then its normaly too late.
The police are just there to sweep up at the end.. we don't have much say in what mess is made.
There needs to be more discipline in schools, in the home and then problems may not get that bad. Kids these days have more rights/ freedoms and access to things than ever before but they have no effective limits at home and know the last bastion the court system is not allowed to deal with them.
The police arrest god knows how many each day but they are soon back out as its not the kids fault.. its adhd or broken home or etc etc.. Society has to realise that each individual owns there own behaviour and there should be pushes for more cells to be built and less xboxes and sky tv in cells.
I have already answered that above - greater investment in after school clubs and incentivise YTS schemes to give youngsters something to do.
But there is no doubt that anti-social behaviour is on the rise, CCTV is not working, we need bobbys on the beat. Its not a case of paying mopre, its about spending wisely.
More bobbys = more deterrent = less crime = less court costs.
Plenty of minor offences could be dealt with by a quiet word and a clip round the ear (proverbial) from a local bobby, rather than monitoring and collating reams of CCTV footage....

Don't bu55er it up for everyone by suggesting traffic "calming" (fuel wasting - pollution-creating) just because of a few irritants. There's too much infringement on people's lives just because of a few who don't behave; another example of this is increasing surveillance because of dodgy imported people. Sort the root cause, don't just suggest blanket restrictions. The police should do their job (or what we have always been led to believe is part of their job) and watch out for these drivers. I guess they don't want the paperwork that this probably now entails.

I agree with you. Traffic calming costs money and, depending on what form it takes, can be a nuisance to most drivers who behave reasonably. You'd probably get a better result if the police were to give it some positive attention and deal with the pests.
Best wishes all,
Dave.
Threaten to go out there late at night with a gang of mates and stop the nuisance yourselves!!!!!!!!! Bet the powers that be will find the man-power to attend then.
I'm fed up of this attitude that 'nobody wants to pay more ..........'. I for one would have no objection to paying more for policing if we actually got police out on the streets doing what what police are supposed to do - upholding the law and making society a safe place to live.
What I do object strongly to is being forced to pay a greater police precept to end up with more Politically Correct feckwits checking that I'm wearing the right colour underpants so as not to offend anyone. FFS
More police on the streets, more cells and more use of those cells. Lilly livered liberals have had their way for the past 50 years and society is no safer now and is in fact most probably more dangerous - despite the manufactured figures government turn out to prove otherwise.
Bout time we brought back corporal punishment and give that a go for five years and see what the effect on crime rates was at the end of it.

There are a number of things that can be done.
The only permanent thing will be one that the residents don't like and that is traffic calming, or maybe making the street a no through road. Avoid speed bumps, obvious reasons.
Restricted access orders will have no effect as plod will have no resource to enforce and thus you'll get even more wound up as the laxxers will be breaking even more laws, though at least, if you get the traffic order right, they'll be endorseable ones.
I suggest that a number of you, four/five maybe? go out and observe and make notes, even film the activities, possibly covertly. It needs to be several of you thus corroboration of evidence.
Then write your statements out soon afterwards, and don't ffs make em all word for word!!!!, and head off to plod shop. Don't take no for an answer. Get fobbed off, then bounce it upstairs. Make em realise you are serious.
The alternative direct action, eg stingers, will get you in more trouble than you will know what to do with.
