Two insurance policies on one car?
Discussion
I have a shared car. I am the reg keeper, 19 yr old Miss Bert has it insured and me and Mrs Bert as named drivers. Master Bert is approaching his 17th bday and needs to be insured on said car.
Can I just take out an additional policy in his name with me and Mrs B as named drivers? I suspect it'll be hard to put him as named driver on Miss B's policy being a 19 yr old.

As far as i know you can have him as a named driver but you can not have two seperate policys on the same car.I tried to do this on my brothers car so i would not lose a 2nd lot of no claims i had when i was running two cars. The insurance company refused to do it as there was already a policy on that car.
Interesting question. As long as you only ever claim on one policy, I can't see a problem. If Mr Bloggs insures himself on the family car and Mrs Bloggs insures herself with another company for the same car, the matter would appear to be straight forward. If the car is stolen from in front of the house, you would claim under whichever policy you chose. I have never been asked by any insurance company whether the car is already insured by another company.

Are you sure that having two policies is not expressly disallowed for the very reason that it could encourage one to, shall we say, facilitate the sorts of incidents for which one would seek compensation?
This was the reason i was refused as mentioned in my other post above. It came down to the fact that if the car was stolen etc i could say it was whilst in my care and therefore my brother would not loose any no claims bonus.I do not think you will find many insurers who want to take this risk and possibly end up being the scapegoat should claim arrise.
I used Dayinsure.com recently for my old man's Merc. (I'm not on his policy)
That vehicle would've been insured on two policies for those days.
Re the underlying reasons for insuring on two policies being two high risk drivers, not sure how easy they are to obtain but we switched my sister to "any licensed driver" on her insurance as it was cheaper than specifically naming her (accidents) and her boyfriend (convictions).

You have to have an insurable interest in the vehicle in order to insure it (or your spouse does)
Thanks all for the info so far. What's an "insurable interest"?
Bert
Let's say that I borrowed your car and crashed it.
As it's your car, you would want to be paid out, not me.
Hence you would have an insurable interest
Well the astounding news is that MAster Bert is safely added as a named driver to Miss Bert's policy for the princely sum of £83 for the remaining 4 months of the policy! No need to get clever at all!
That makes it £240 per year for a 17yr old boy!!!!! How does that happen? Well done hefalump insurance.

I just rang up mine,
have my own car, and going to use company pool car, but for buisiness oer weekend, I wanted to be able to use for personal,
was told I cant insure 1 car one tow policies,
compnay would need to cancel the existing one and I insure it
as your correct in saying one car one policy

It's known as double insurance as far as I am aware. Whatever it is called, it is not allowed. Only one policy per car.

The danger is, if you allow people to have more than one policy on a car, the scrotes of this world 'accidentally' lose/break their car and claim on both policies. Fraud.
Scrotes accidentally lose/break their car now and claim......If there were two policies then there'd also be 2 premiums being paid.
