I was exceeding the speed limit on the M23 , driving in the inside lane, no other cars in the middle or outside lane, nice and sunny afternoon, as I came around a bend I see ahead of me a police car 1/2 a mile or so parked on the hard shoulder with a Police man standing behind an open door holding a scanner gun aiming at my car, and what did he do? he shot me :-(

Did I hit the brakes before he fired? Only time will tell, It felt like a stand off in the OK coral :-)

I'll see if I get the little letter informing me that because I have a legal car with a licence and insurance, and MOT all registered in my name, that I am fortunate enough to have my future income threatened with some new points for doing soemthing as awful as driving over the speed limit on a motorway with no other cars around me.
It will make me wonder as always, if I am the idiot for being legal when 1 in 10 people dont even bother with insurance and registering the cars in their names

Also, and being serious

I wouldnt want to be the BIB standing on the hard shoulder with the protection of a police car door, while cars and lorries go zooming by at 69MPH ish

surely there must be a some health and safety issues here

I would hazard a guess and say that if he wanted to issue you with a ticket he would have gone after you. If it was one of the camera safety partnership vans then it wil be a 14 day wait.

Depends. Under 90 mph you are probably ok.

I was on the M23 a couple of months ago, delivering a customer to
Gatwick Airport at about 8am one Saturday morning.

No one on the road, me minding my own business doing a relaxed
90 mph on the cruise control in lane 1, mostly listening to Radio 4
and chatting to the customer.

Up pops Plod with the hairdryer for a quick zap. I heard
nothing. You might also.

Clearly an empty M23 is a revenue collection exercise,
since motorways are our safest type of road.

Shame on the local police for having enough spare time
to do this. I read somewhere that 87% of burglaries
remain unsolved.

trafpol don't have burglaries assigned to them to investigate.

If it was reveue collection then as you were travelling at 90 then you would have been given a ticket.
87% depnds on your definition of solved as I can tell you exactly whose done 250 burglaries locally but we can only prove 50 of them and even then he'll only get 3 ish years. You see the chap knows all about forensics having been caught so many times. I also don't see how you think what someone is doing at 8am in the morning will solve burglaries.. they tend to happen over night or during the day week time not 8am on a saturday morning. Ask most officers on here and we could probaby tell you whose doing 80 % of the given burglary and car crime on an area. Proving it the point that CPS will charge is a rather different game.

If it was 4am I would want my officers out and about on the ground not targetting speeders on the motorway. 8 AM they were obviously after those who were taking the P or after a specific indivdual.

Then it's up to the government to allocate resources away from revenue collection to law and order.

Police have already moved officers away from speed enforcement. Trafpol numbers used to be about 15% of officer strength, that went down to about 5% & SCPs with camera enforcement took their place instead.

Funnily enough, some people complain about it.

Whilst the M23 might appear deserted aren't sections of it renowned for deer crossing the motorway?

Therefore the Police might be well justified in stopping those taking the piss!

Hardly surprising that they do complain. I'd like to think that trafpol do a lot more than stand around holding speed guns. Speed limit enforcement seems to be fashionable these days and imo this focus is wrong - but I'd like to see more trafpol on the roads.

I'm clearly naive, but I thought the hard shoulder was for emergencies, not revenue collection?

We keep saying revenue collection... However the OP who states he was driving at 90 (which is revenue collectable speed if you want to use such a term) was not dealt with. As such I think revenue collection is not the isuse here.

Fair point, but is use of the hard shoulder for non-emergencies (as this clearly is) allowed?

Police have certain excemptions. I personaly would not stand there. There may be an issue in that location who knows? Speed enforcement is not really something I do and most officers don't unless they have been tasked due to a specific problem or there really is nothing else left then you may default to it.

why not? Dont all burglers drive stolen car, all drink and drive, and claim off the solcial?

Surely, if they were assigned burglaries, they would be killing two or even three birds with one stone?
