A local boy has (and is still doing) done about 200 to 250 domestic burglaries. He is not a druggie or anything like that. He will be going to court soon. How long would you as the public expect a chap like this to get in prison. I will not even begin to tell you how much investigation has gone into this.

If one set aside the leading nature of your question, would five actual years (would that be a ten year sentence?) sound fair?

To be fair I guess its obvious the answer won't be 200 years in prison but on the low mark. I'm not going to say what he is expected to get just yet. Would just like to see what the public think he should get and what they think he will get before I reveal all. Its a little like deal or no deal but no-one wins (well maybe him) and I don't have a little beard.

Just really interested as to what the public would like and if it is in line with what I and my colleagues would like to see.

My money would be on a 24 months sentence and doing 12 months time, almost worth the inconvenience rolleyes

Not to be confused with my aspiration that he should get the key thrown away, as is a career criminal he would offer no value or input to the rest of society.

Guess it depends on his age, the younger he is the less sentence he'll probably get. If I were the beak I'd give him a minimum of 5 years jail time.

Knowing the state out judicial system is in, 18 months tops, probably serve 9, maybe even less if he's let out tagged.

Pathetic isn't it?

I'll go for 6 months inside (so out in 3 furious) given that he's got previous, otherwise I'd have guessed at a couple of hundred hours community service (what is that anyway? I've yet to see any chain gangs picking up litter or repainting the railings).

What would I like to see? About 3 - 4 years of genuine stripy suntan time. Never gonna happen though.

Incidentally... just wondering here. If he's convicted of burglary of my house, 6 Acacia Avenue. Can I then take a civil claim out against the little git for the cost of any damage that wasn't covered by insurance?

I'm just thinking that a host of CCJs would make future chavlife a little more awkward (ok, not a lot, but it's a start - particularly if you sent bailiffs after his Corsa & auctioned it...) or is that forbidden because he's 'served his punishment'?

Cut his hands off and see if he reoffends then?

Burgle his mothers house, and see how he likes it?

Send him to a work camp for 5 years to do back breaking physical labour building hospitals or a new railway infrastructure?

Custody will serve nothing but teach him more tricks as he sits in his comfortable cell watching Richard and Judy, if he even gets a custodial sentence as the prisons are full...

You say boy, so how old?

Without that, we can't know whether it will be Young Offenders or what, nor can we know the maximum community service and punishments which can be handed down.

I'd like to see a short stint on the village whipping stocks - quick, effective and cheap

I suspect he'll get something less than a year in 'real' time.

There is another question here though - why did he manage to do 250 burgularies before he was caught and, from the way the OP reads, allowed to carry on whilst awaiting sentence?

But which side of Teenager??!!? 18 vs 12 = different punishments available...

Well, I say punishment, in the loosest possible sense of course....

Ok, I will take a stab in the dark and say they will ask him really really nicely if he would be so kind as to not do it again, and they will buy him a lovely PS3 and take him to Florida for two weeks...

Over a number of years 2.. we suspected him but due to his string of convictions for same he has learnt a lot about forensics. Currently out as to have him in on remand would reduce his overall prison time (you get 2 for 1 on remand). Some of them we were not aware he had done (he has admitted some) as tey had not been reported. There is more to it regards continued offending I can't go into.

Jas over 20 years of age.

Ok, then not Y.O.I so possibly 1-2 years. I am not current on prison sentences, I am happy to say I haven't been inside a criminal court for well over a year now....

How many of the burglaries have you evidence he commited, and how many has he asked to take into account?

Bearing in mind, even if the sentence was 4 years, he'd be out in 1.
