Apologies if this has been done before but could anyone advise on what distance a mobile camera (back window of a van jobbie) can detect your speed from, when you are approaching it?

Visibility was fine on a bright day... err...ie today!!

cheers

I may be wrong but I think the ACPO guidlines for max distance is 1000 feet. Enforcement is though carried out at far greater distances, I have seen reports in the forum of prosecutions in excess of 700 metres.
It is rumoured that SCP operators are being recruited by the military to be used as snipers as they have powere above those of the most highly trained Army marksmen. In addition they also have fantastic powers of speed assessment at considerable distances, which enables them to form a prior opinion of the speed of approaching and departing vehicles, so will be very useful in a tank battle situation.

The weapon of choice for most roadside scammers is the LTi20-20.

AIUI, they claim its normal operating range is for distances of up to 1000m. They also claim that their operators are so well trained that they are able to form a prior opinion of your excess speed at these distances rolleyes

I seem to recall the ACPO Code of Practice suggests that these devices should not be used to target vehicles over 2000ft away if they are handheld. I suspect, however, that roadside scamvans would have the units tripod mounted.

2000ft However, this is just a generalisation; the LTI2020 can operate to 1000m (very difficult to do when handheld).
