Can someone tell me how long a tachograph must be kept in the cab and what exemptions etc there may be and if there are any differences if the driver is only doing short distances etc. Have looked for this info but I guess someone on here is going to know off the top of their head. Thanks!

There are exceptions, recovery trucks & a few other trucks that dont travel further than 100km/62 mile from base (e.g. scaffold trucks). The rules change on 11th April for recovery trucks & maybe others, its VERY complicated.
O.T. Hosedoctor ,are you /were you a 'Hosedoctor' e.g. not Pirtek ?

It doesnt matter how short the trip is,even if you are going a mile up the road they will nick you if you dont have a tacho, they must be kept in the macine from the time you start work, till the next morning, and you must keep the last 5 days worth in the cab.Hope this helps.
Wrong!
Whether you need to use one or not depends on the type of work or journey you are doing but suffice to say you probably will need one.
They don't need to be kept in the tacho head until the start of the next shift, You draw a line at the start and end of work and write in something along the lines of start of rest and end of rest by the lines, I just put edr or ewr at the beginning of shift and sdr or swr at the end.
You need to carry every card for the present week plus the last day's card for the previous week and you must make sure you do not have more than 21 days worth of cards in your possession, these must be handed into or posted (if away from base) to your office.
This changes on 1st April though.

The info in the link gives a good idea of if you need to use the taco.

Just to clarify (because nobody has made the point clearly), the tacho applies to the driver, not the vehicle. Therefore if you swap trucks, you take the relevant tachos with you. Do not leave them in the truck!

THe man's right, but a driver must carry with him/her the previous 21 days(3 weeks) tacho discs. No doubt to prove weekly rest periods have been taken. And plod/the ministry can stop you moving any further if they so wish - if you can't!!!
With tachograph law, ignorance is not an excuse! If you don't know - it's your fault!!

HAPPY TRUCKING!!

You've got that wrong, read my first post.

Slightly off topic, but I've just bought an Iveco Cargo 7.5 tonne Horsebox which is fitted with a tacho, do we need to use it? The lorry will not be used to carry horses for reward.
Depends. If they are your own horses then no problem. If for example you were either a vet or a stables offering "free collection and delivery" then yes you would. Although its not for reward it constitutes part of a commercial process.
