Here's one..
Back in 1982 my then stepfather gave away my car (an Austin Somerset) to a scrappy while I was out of the country.
It was never reported as stolen, but it was given away without my permission...
Just looked at the DVLA site and the car is taxed and registered...
Just wondering if I can reclaim the car.... :-)

I've got to ask why it has taken you 24 years to get around to this?

Have you only just noticed?

I knew it had gone all those years back, but since the words 'Scrappy' and 'never darken my doorstep again' were used I just left things...
Then happened to be looking at the VOSA site to see if any of my old cars were still running and the Somerset was...

what site do you look it up on?

I wouldn't mind tracking down a few of my old wheels.

I am very tempted to say with slight reservations that there is nothing in law to stop you claiming the car back.
Particularly as you had reasonably considered it destroyed.
Would be tough on the present owner mind you, unless it was the scrap dealer.

Charming little new Zealand OIK....
Lost a 66 Mustang at the same time, unfortunately that doesn't show up on the DVLA computer...

I think that you would have to evidence that you have title, not simply be claiming a car based on make / model and looking up a number plate.

What evidence do you have to show title was yours
Are you prepared to assert that the vehicle was taken without your permission - an offence
What evidence do you have that no permission given at the time, not simply now a change of mind - gap of 24 years will count against you here

I'm not actually going to go through with it...
It was just a bit of idle speculation.
I don't think we have a stolen vehicle extradition treaty with New Zealand :-)

But if BLiar is running true to form, NZ probably has one with the UK - Streaky
Can't believe I used "true" in connection with "BLiar"! - S
