The "Community Speed Watch" groups have been around a while. From what I've read it's a five-minute wonder, once everybody has had a go (and got it out their system) they get bored and the equipment sits in somebody's house unused. A while back I found some minutes of a county council where they said that new groups wanted to start up and old groups were not using their equipment so they were going to ask for it back!

Interestingly radar speed devices are illegal to operate without an Ofcom licence. Police forces are exempt, but I wonder how privately purchased devices operated by the public under a police-endorsed scheme would be viewed?

It also causes a lot of disruption in the community as these busybodies find the worst culprit is their neighbour

I always laugh at letters being written into our local paper about how people must be driving across town to do some speeding.

I have occasionally made the observation: "Its not them you fools its us!"

If locals don't want people speeding outside their houses they know what to do: Stop speeding themselves because they're the ones who are doing it!

Oddly accurate in my opinion.

Catch myself occasionally on 'home straight' speeding

Wonder if its familliarity with locale
makes you over confident

its a bit contradictory that story.... they say the speed guns will be deployed in "speed plagued communities"..... which implies they will be used where speeding is a known problem.....but then they go on to say
" although it might provide valuable intelligence highlighting a speeding problem that could then be tackled by police officers."....which implies they will be used to find out where people are speeding... confused

and if you get two letters, you'll then be targetted..... what exactly does that mean!

Even the steadiest hand holding the laser dodgyscope will give slip errors; with wobbly old vigilantes it'll be even worse. If only they could find some proper interest in their lives. Very sad.

Not a problem in my part of the world fortunately - South Wales SCP seem to screw the motorist quite nicely on their own without any outside assistance.

First time a letter lands on my doorstep however I'll be out and about and complaining to the local BiB everytime I see a car parked outside one of the volunteers houses that its causing an obstruction, that the owner verbally abused me etc any little thing I can legally do to make life awkward for them. The LA would be bombarded with letters about uncut hedges and trees in these villages contributing to 'unsafe road conditions' and gawd help them the first time I fall over one of their rubbish bins

It's about time feckwits like this are made to realise that we can ALL go out and make life awkward and unpleasant and be interfering busybodies if we wish.

Attually maybe we should organize a Pistonheads Parade (200+ loud cars) to drive through the village. Love to see the look on their faces hehe

Didn't realise that mate. Can't say I'm surprised where it is though really. 'Certain' areas in the Vale have always felt they were too good to let the common people in

Local Neighbourhood Watch paid a couple of hundred pounds for a speed gun. Trouble is, after a few weeks the novelty wore off; the last I heard it was being used to see how fast kids could kick a football.

they got! me at stoke sub hamdon , plod ( who was also at site) waved me over, grandadplodwannabee came over to car and showed me the reading ,40mph, plod showed me his reading of ,32mph, and gave the usual lecture speed kills ect,
now for the clincher, I WAS DOING EXACTLY 30MPH, how do I know this? simple I have a satnav set up to warn me of the bend which they regularly hide behind, the alarm goes off 4 times on the approach to this bend, so I am sure to be at 30mph before coming into thier view, satnav showed 30mph speedo showed 30mph how come the huge discrepency?

what concerns me here is that MopPlod got a reading of 40 mph = fine + points - possible loss of licence etc while the real BiB made it only 32 mph = carry on sir.

This happened with two certified machines I assume so ~ 20% error just in the operators usage.

Mmmm.........

But at 32 mph .. not even at 10% over .. never mind 10% + 2 per the guidelines. rolleyes

Slippage. false reading.. operator error.

Sorry but when livelihoods, bank balances are at stake und these idiots claim they work the to the "guidelines".. there ist no room for such error und potential injustice to someone. rolleyes

I would bet the officer would have done nothing but for Granny und need to be pee cee in her favour rolleyes

Pee cee does not mean professional either rolleyes .. it lead to suspicion of very unprofessional und sloppy behaviour in order to meet some absurd target rolleyes ranting censored
