Bought an ex-demo Golf GT Tdi with Xenons already fitted.

The are brilliant lights but, when fitted on the Golf, there is no way of altering the height of the beam other than to take it to the dealer. The adjuster control isn't present on my car which also has the automatic lights option when it's getting darker.

The dealer tells me that my lights are fitted correctly.

The problem is that, on dipped, some approaching cars clearly think that you are on full beam. This can happen when following cars too and so I try to keep that extra bit further back but still am concerned that I might be dazzling the driver in front.

What else can I do to prevent dazzling other road users and is there a risk of these lights getting me stopped by the BiB?

Most people think xenons are on high beam. If the dealer has checked them and said they are within legal limits then I wouldn't worry. If your really worried you can get it checked at a garage or you could try ringing your local station they may have a traffic officer who can check it for you (we have done this in the past). I personal doubt that you will be stopped for this.

When Xenons are fitted I always thought there was a legal requirement for them to be auto self levelling so as to avoid dazzling (the ones on my ZT are)
If the self leveller fails, the default is supposed to be that the lights point down (ie, shorten the beam)
I only get flashed VERY occasionaly, and then its usually from people who are more on my side of the road!

Can anyone clarify the levelling thing?

My understanding is that both self-levelling and washers are required for OEM-fit xenons.

They are probably aligned correctly, but take it to an MOT testing station to be sure.

When mine come on, they do seem to self level at the time.

I guess that, if you're on a rather twisty or undulating road, it may give the impression of full beam.

Ta for your answers, it was just a concern.

If they are legally set but still dazzle, isn't an offence committed?

Well if they're legal, and I've no reason to think otherwise, how can an offence be being committed?

They're just friggin bright - oh and they do have washers.

Highway Code 94
You MUST NOT use any lights in a way which would dazzle or cause discomfort to other road users.

But if they are legal and you turn them on dipped, to see where you're going, surely you are not causing an offence.

On full beam, then yes but dipped and legal, surely not.

Our new Golf GTi has Xenons and we get flashed by people we've passed on the motorway quite often. I can see that the passenger side headlight is too high - I can see it shining into the glass area of cars I'm passing. There must be some way to adjust the 'baseline' that the self levelling works from. Surf Surf Google Google. Here:

I've had this problem many times before. I have to say I found the dealer was pretty useless at adjusting it. One time they were so low I couldn't see at night and another they were so high that nobody else could see! They are really easy to adjust, there is an allen key bolt on the top of the light marked U and D. Turn in the direction you want to raise or lower. Hope this helps

Thanks for that - I have exactly that problem.
