yes

I got the usual "you aren't taxed" letter and a demand for money. Send 'em a colour photocopy of the disc and made 'em write back saying that the details had been properly corrected.

I was properly cheesed off that they just sent a bill - rather than a polite enquiry as to whether or not their records were up to date - but that's the way of things these days. Guilty until procen innocent - if you're a motorist.

Ermm..I'd do nothing. You've not been told of a problem, nor is there one. Why cause trouble for yourself by pointing out that a database is wrong.

If you have any proof of where / when you bought the disc, hang on to that, but in the meantime, unless you hear anything from them I wouldn't worry about it. If you do hear from them, tell them you have a disc.

I presume the motor is not a recent acquisition.

If it is examine the RFL most carefully. Has it been 'doctored' ?

Otherwise it is their error and needs no action by you unless they contact you.

That advice from tigger1 is bad advice imho.

The point is that while the database is wrong if OP drives past an ANPR check or encounters a traffic unit so equipped his vehicle will be flagged up and a pull will result.

At that point he is on back foot and trying to argue out of his car being seized. Law of Sod ensures that will happen at the most inconvenient time/place imaginable.

see Computer says no thread.

Advice, get it sorted pronto. Put everything in writing, even if you are merely following up a phone call, keep copies, send mail special delivery where you get proof of delivery, NOT recorded delivery. (Reasons techncal Royal Mail issue, recorded delivery = expensive joke)

If you follow the advice to do nothing at some point you'll be on shanks's and facing a bill for vehicle towing and recovery. It's a bar steward I know but get it sorted, you know it makes sense.

PS DVD sorry for taking a different stance to you oh obi-wan bow

Perhaps - but I would vary my chosen action depending on how long it is until new tax is needed, and then obviously if a reminder is forthcoming.

Whilst one is in possession of a tax disc and the DVLA thinks one is not one might as well fix the problem by writing to 'em....if its a bug in the website software you're doing them a favour. If its an error in their database you might well save yerself being pulled unnecessarily...

Sometimes I think the DVLA is staffed by morons - other times I KNOW they are.

Couple of weeks back had a letter demanding £80 for not sorning a vehicle Reg No N*** *** a Renault Clio. Found this strange beacuse only the end of last year the vehicle was involved in accident, was written off and I transferred the 'Cherished No' off it to it's replacement and claimed a refund on the several months VED remaining.

The transfer went through and the 'Cherished No' now resides on the new car and a draft was issued for the VED refund.

Spoke to them and asked how the hell could the Clio not be sorned when the had only just sent me a cheque for unused VED on it. "Hoh Hah Hummm........ Sorry it's a computer error (a phrase I HATE - it's not computers that make errors, it's the feckwits that operate them) ignore the letter" Further discusion showed up that they still had the Cherished No registered to the Clio even though I all the docs to show they had transferred it to the Pug AND the had issued a disk in that number for the Pug.

*IF* the police have to work with databases this inaccurate is it any wonder people have doubts about the efficacey of the confiscation laws.

Well, that's not exactly great news...did you contact them or them you?

Fingers crossed that you have all the receipts. Have they said that you never bought tax this year, or that you bought it but then returned the disc...or something else!?

Surely the disc itself is receipt enough...shows date/place of purchase, registration, make, model etc

That's the key thing. If you have the Tax Disc itself and a receipt showing who you paid for it you are onto a winner. Even just having the disc is good enough. I didn't have to go to court - a letter was sufficient.

If you are clearly innocent of not taxing the car and its a cock-up the DVLA do not want to incur the costs and botheration of taking you to court. And who want the botheration themselves? If this case ends up in court all that will happen is that the OP will produce the tax disc as evidence and the whole thing will be thrown out in short order.
