If you were to receive an "ERROR E01" on a laser gun, what would be your first thought?

You mean as the operator? Depends on circumstance.

If it was a one off I would question the reflectivity of that target. If instead it was a frequent occurrence I would be questioning the performance of my gun (or my aim).

Why do you ask?

E01 is generally if there is no return signal (no target/too far/poor reflection) or the target is way too close.
