What behaviour when stopped by BiB?
Discussion
I don't know what the etiquete is when you are stopped by BiB these days (have n't been stopped for decades
).
Always been told that when stopped by the BiB to get out of my car and walk towards them and to behave polite.
Is this still true in this day and age with knifes, guns, etc or do they prefer you stay put in your car with your hands on your wheel (like we see on Yankee tv programs).
Please advice.

I stopped a bloke a few months ago after he'd flashed past my fully liveried Police car on the motorway at about 100MPH. Now, I was on the way to deal with another job, which, although wasn't blue-light urgent, still required my attendence ASAP, so I followed this bloke off the motorway and decided that I'd stop him, give him a bollocking, and providing he accepted it, I'd leave it at that.
His opening line when I stopped him didn't bode well for my plan - "WHAT THE F*#@ DO YOU WANT?". This clearly took away any option of cautioning him for the offence, so the pen came out. He shouted, ranted and raved at me for a good five minutes, pointing out that his car was an ex-Police car with a calibrated speedo so there was no way he could have been speeding, and describing in detail what he thought of me, my uniform and even the fact that I wear glasses. Now, it's all water off a ducks back to me, but what changed the nature of the stop again was this...
After I'd put most of his details on the ticket, he suddenly walked away from me towards the drivers door of his car. I asked him where he was going, to which he replied "I'M GETTING A SHOTGUN OUT TO F*#@ING SHOOT YOU WITH". Within about a second, he suddenly realised that this wasn't the wisest of wisecracks to have made, as he made intimate facial contact with the tarmac road surface and discovered what it felt like to have 16 stone of Reg Local pressing down on him. Hard.
Obviously, if you're stopped by the Police, then it's clear that threatening to shoot them isn't the best of ideas.
I don't have a problem with people getting out to talk to me - we're not in america, and it's far safer for me to talk to a driver on the pavement than to stand in the road. I'd usually approach the passenger side anyway, and ask the driver to get out.

Thanks, good to know that has not changed then.

I don't know whether to laugh or cry! I laughed. Especially at this bit:

I thought absolutely everyone had learnt about making 'jokes' like that by now... Edited by becca_viola on Friday 30th March 16:17

Do you mean that you were no longer disposed to let it go with a telling off, or did this actually restrict the options open to you?

He might as well have got out of the car and said "Please book me - I'm clearly not fit to breathe the same air as other humans, let alone drive a car".

Insults and threats are obviously a trifle silly, but I'd be interested to know the correct response to bib questions like "How fast were you going before you saw me".
I wouldn't actually admit to a speed - the best advice would be to play dumb and get the Officer to tell you what speed you were doing, or what offence you've committed.
Denying offences and arguing the case with Officers doesn't get you anywhere either - the only place I'll argue with someone over whether they're guilty or not is in court.
Your best bet is to get the Officer to tell you what you've done wrong, make out like you didn't realise it and see if they get the pen out or just give you a lecture. If they give you a talking to, take it on the chin, and if they decide to book you, don't make any replies which could constitute an admission of guilt.
Basically, if they bollock you, then an apology might be appropriate, but don't apologise if you're being booked.

Sorry mate, that came out wrong. I was just so incredulous.
"Oh it's a copper. Oi, copper, I'm going to shoot you...."
My advice is at least open the drivers window, or door.
I can recall a man who refused, and had his drivers window put in and a police dog inserted through the hole.
The dog then bit off and ate the bicep of his right arm.
( he was in a stolen Sierra Cosworth and was trying to drive over the back of the police car in front of him, lest anyone fear this action was a trifle over the top.)

Served him right though. Paddy

I was very serious. As an immigrant I have to know these things otherwise you will start moaning about us again.
Especially if it's one of those nice red police cars* you see in London
