A neigbour has recently got a new TT. yesterday they noticed a mysterious chalk cross out side their house and an arrow on road pointing up their road. Obviously slightly bemused by this they call the BiBs who told them this is a 'new' way that car thieves operate when scoping out potential targets. The marking have now been removed with Mr Karcher's assistance!

Any thoughts, knowledge from BiBs (we fall under TVP) appreciated - if it is suitable for an open forum.

Nothing new about this - burglars have been casing jobs and marking them with chalk for donkeys years.

Hide the car keys or better still take them to bed with you. Amazing the numbers of breaks to houses overnight when car keys are taken.

Frankly, if thieves are determined enough to get my car I would rather they took the keys from the kitchen counter top than invaded my bedroom in the middle of the night.

And yes, I have had the pleasure of a 5 am visit, with a fecking great boulder being thrown through a patio door.

It's only a lump of minerals with the odd bit of dead cow thrown in when all's said and done, it's insured and can be replaced.

also, don't flash your lights if you see a car without lights coming towards you at night, it's a gang initiation and they will kill the first person who flashes them......

oh, and my mate's brother's wife heard that someone was told by this arab bloke to stay away from london at easter.....

I just have this image now of some mightily puzzled council contractors standing in the road.

"Ere, Charlie, I thought you marked out that drain?"
"Bugger that, some sod's washed off where we're supposed to put the new road markings!"

Probably better for your neighbour that the local car thieves are using good old fashioned obvious chalk, rather than a steal-to-order gang simply having a nice database of GPS points where they can find all the cars they're after simply by chucking the co-ordinates into a navigation system and going for a drive.

Do what I used to do when I had an Impreza, and park it outside next door's house.

Just a thought but if it is known the markings indicate that the car might be targetted then surely crafty copper could be onto an easy arrest?

I'm not sure I know what TVP is.(Thames Valley?). A camera would do just as a precaution.

Or anywhere.. They are too busy filling in forms. Sad that I often discover they have the time to man speed cameras though...

But to the OP - Invest in a pair of large protective dogs.

Was it chalk or paint? Was it the only mark? I suspect it was more likely a utility / council marking up for some repairs.

Yep thames valley. And yeah youd be lucky for a spare copper!

We dont have the resources to deal with immediate and urgent stuff let along sit up on a car for god knows how long waiting for it to be nicked!.

I can see the news now.

Police sit up on car about to be stolen.
Police disturb theft in progress.
Pursuit occurs.
Car crashes.
People get hurt.
Police get sued.

Que bbc news and civil liberties groups calling for a no pursuit policy (again) cos little johnny gets hurt driving a nicked motor.

Is it me or has April 1st lasted longer than normal this year?

Sounds like a crock of shite to me. Surely no blagger is going to leave a mark at all these houses they've subsequently robbed? They'd want to case the joint (I believe thats the term used) and then do the job (ditto) and leave as little trace as poss.

Is it school hols there? Thank heavens kids dont play hopscotch these days, or else the lines would point all over the place!

Good god. Why did you wash it off? You had the perfect opportunity to draw a huge chalk cock in the road, and now you've missed it!

Pikeys and gypsies have been using this system for years when they found a "target", either the gullible women who'd buy their pegs or as a rich home for burglary!!! They were using it when I was a kid and I'm in my 60th year!!! New?!?!?!?! I think not, just "new" to police??
