Police Points Targets
Discussion
Apologies if this has been done before but I've heard from 2 separate sources that our gallant BiB have their performance assessed on a monthly (?) basis using a points system - ie a certain amount of points are awarded for each type of incident dealt with with monthly targets set .
Rumour has it that a full on murder case will get 10 points & but a speeding offence will get 5 points - on the face of it one looks like a far easier option.
Is there any truth in this or is it total pub chat?

I'm not sure of the intervals for recording but this has been done before. There was a programme "Dispatches"(I think)?? that looked into what it was doing aswell. Bonuses based on targets hit and how cops were attributing successes to individuals (or somein like that).
Whilst at first glance it looks like a good way of measuring police forces success rates it really isn't a great idea.

Lazy rozzers get a kick from their colleagues for not pulling their weight, other than that as long as you are busy and active you get left alone.
My only targets set are
By 2010,
a 40% reduction in the numbers of people killed or seriously injured in road accidents;
a 50% reduction in the numbers of children killed or seriously injured;

Beware those reductions coming from a reclassification of what constitutes 'seriously injured'.
Points based on how many tickets / what you do - err, no !
Some days you may go out and give a ticket to everyone you stop - other days everyone gets a warning ..... it's based on what they have done, etc - not on the boss expecting their quota from you at the end of each day.
Sorry to disappoint some people .... but thats the way it is, in London at least !

The best of British to you old son!
You do not have a hope in hell of coming anywhere near those achievements unless government policy is not only changed but totally reversed.
You will have to put many more trafpol on the roads booking dangerous drivers, NOT speeders; and you will have to educate and if required prosecute pedestrians for jaywalking.
Nothing else will enable you to achieve those figures.
I think this story from 2005 is the one you mean

An MP has criticised North Wales Police plans for a 'points' system to monitor officers' performance in catching motorists committing traffic offences.
From 1 July, officers will be set a monthly points target of 200 which they will build up through arrest numbers.
Catching a speeding motorist would bring five points while arresting a drink driver would mean 25 points.
Alyn and Deeside MP Mark Tami said the pilot scheme could "shred public confidence in the police".
The Police Federation have described the scheme as "ludicrous".
North Wales Police, led by Richard Brunstrom who is known for his tough anti-speeding policies, is bringing in the six-month trial to reduce road casualties, crime and bad driving.
Brunstrom. What a surprise.

With 25 points for a drink driver or other simmilar arrest and 5 for a speeding ticket etc, most officers should reach a monthly score of 200 on a backshift weekend!
An informal points sytem was used by my force but not stringently enforced - simply a way of answering queries s to how many poeple were booked for various offences as well as seeing who was working. But get a fatal enquiry and those figures go out the door.
The only targets I have now the same as Lambo cop's and a record of the number of hours spent on core patrol routes,dealing with crime and attending (not necessarily road policing) grade 1/grade 2 calls.

I think Mad Doc posted up article on this .. Manchester Evening as related to GMP. I have other cousins with GMP who have verified in private that the story has substance und not journalistic mayhem.
Manchester Police federation rep was reportedly "unhappy" over the "Browny point system based on arrest"
I agree. I do not think any policeman should be judged on how many criminals he caught. Catching a criminal ist a team effort anyway
It should be like in any other profession.. how the officer completes his work.. his demeanour with his colleagues.. ability to work as part of team .. sleuthe on his own .. but feed this back to his team.. deal with his greatest critic Joe Public und Mr Middle Johnny Bulldog England or Donald in his trewsers if North of border
His appraisal should reflect his committed professional respsonsiblity to serve justice.. but not necessarily the law as justice und law are non-identical twins
und are as chalk und cheese if you like as our "terrible" twin kittens.
with one being girly und studious und the other male und pushing his corner to assert himself as adult
