My other half has just had her renewal notice through from 'The Grey Trunked' insurance company.

£460.00 Fully Comp..................now heres the clever bit.

Went on the same companies website and worked out an identical on-line quote, result..........

£303.00

Is it no wonder everyone can boast the ability to 'beat your renewal cost'

Nothing new. Speak with them, and explain the situation - they *might* just be able to "match" it for you, otherwise, tell them you're leaving.

The genius with one compny (that has African and Indian variants) is that if you're an existing customer, I don't think you can physically buy online from them...you have to ring.

I had a similar thing....1200 last year turned into 2200 this year. Always a nice surprise. rolleyes

That said, I have trouble getting annoyed with them as their initial quotes are usually much better that everyone else.

I tend to float between Elephant and Admiral (the same company) each year to take advantage of their introductory discounts.

My renewal from Norwich Union Direct was £600, i paid through a broker £400 with Norwich Union being the underwriter! It always pays to shop around!

Todays renewal from Norwich Union Direct £470. Better policy with lower excess and legal cover £325 from RAC, underwritten by ... Norwich Union.

Fingers crossed that RAC dont use indian call centres as this was the only reason I decided to look around having had to endure the nightmare that is the NU call centre.

I was having terrible trouble with my ISP whose call centres are based in India. After upgrading from 512kb to 2mb, involving renewing the contract for a further 12 months, my service became so unreliable as to be unusable.

Now not wishing to be racist her; no doubt the people they employ are very intelligent and all have degrees from some university or other and are prepared to work for a pittance a week but why oh why can't they speak English properly or at least understandably.

During 30 or more phonecalls I think I spoke to one I could understand and every call had a line quality that made it almost impossible to hear.

After 'banging my head against a wall" for over 4 weeks one of my son's friends who is Indian AND a computer expert offered to speak to them for me.

Ended up getting my 'Package' reduced from £29.99 a month to £14.99 a month as a 'Loyalty' Bonus for not leaving them.

Anyone else having trouble with C*rphone Whorehouse/@netel might like to bear this in mnd whem 'negotiating' with them.

Bennetts m/c insurance 1200cc automatic renewal £179.00, Bennetts website quote same details £106.00

I would rather pay more elsewhere than use them again but suppose all are using the same trick.

Bit off topic but had similar last November with RAC breakdown renewal.
Opened renewal letter, saw the price, checked online & found i could buy it cheaper as a new customer online mad
Phoned them & with a bit of bloody haggling they renewed at the cheaper price.

I'm toying with the idea of a chat with the OFT moan they seem to have done well on the bank charges front, maybe they can find something wrong with this practice.

Gonna do it with the g/friends renewal rather than mine incase ins co get arsey and refuse to insure again argue

My wife's renewal came through from Churchill for £205, no worries I thought just pay up - until she said the excesses seemed a bit high. Comparing to last year's quotes they had tripled the excess, this was enough to shop around.

Which I did, found the same policy from Prudential £205 with zero excess ... you've guessed it they are underwritten by Churchill!

Just about to click buy, and a colleague spots what I'm doing, and asks whether I went through Quidco? What! Turns out its a cashback site, who Prudential pay £130 for new policies - and I get the cashback! Net cost £75 if it pays!

I've always found Elephant will match their online quotes if you have them handy when you call them. Otherwise you could just cancel the policy and sign up online anyway.

We did the same a couple of years back with Elephant - renewal was over £200 more than a new online quote. When I pointed this out to the 'sales staff', she told me, and I quote;

"You're not allowed to do that" !!

Speechless!

Problem I've got with Elephant is you can't post date your online quotes to your renewal date. My renewal date is my birthday and this year I'm 25, so a big drop in insurance terms it seems. I've "created" quotes online with my birthday a bit earlier to see how much it should be, but if I do a genuine quote now it quotes me at 24 not 25. I tired calling them to explain my situation but it was serious banghead

My only solution at the minute seems to be cancel my renewal with Elephant, be uninsured for a day (not use the car of course), then start a new policy the day after my birthday! The wonderful world of online insurance!

here's another perspective...what is wrong with an introductory discount? That's all it is. All fair and above board. You pay x for year 1, the renewal comes round for y. You do the normal purchasing due-diligence (don't you?) and either elect to pay y, negotiate with current supplier or go to new supplier.

No big deal, high horses can run free and unfettered as they are not required!

Elephant - same company as Admiral and Bell. You tend to get a new customer online discount from them but its only around 10%. I usually move between them come renewal so I always get the 10% off.

Sometimes they price match and I don't have to move. Sometimes they don't. I do know that they use the same 'price lists' as quotes come up identical with dicounts and extras (business use, car hire etc) come up the same too.

If Elephant won't play ball then try one of the other 2 and see what you get.

Go on confused.com, get the best quote then ring A-Plan, that's what I do every year and they always beat or match the best quote, and you speak to humans.

Is nice.

I went on-line to confused.com for renewal on my wife's Mondeo and my Rover 75. This reduced the premium from a quoted £360 for the Mondeo and £375 for the Rover from NU to £185-00 and £189 respectively. The best quotation was from the RAC who then gave a discount because we're both members and a further bit off because we're insuring 2 cars. The only downside is that I have lost the 3rd party cover to drive cars not owned by me. However, I have another policy on my rally car which gives this cover anyway.
