Is DCI Glen Hunt the sort of copper we want?
Discussion
One reason given to me today (by a senior BiB) for the BBC's 'Life on Mars' proving so popular is that the man on the Clapham Omnibus wants coppers to act like DCI Hunt (and Jack Regan, et al) with criminals, and like George Dixon with the public. And I thought ... how true - Streaky

But Hunt deals with everybody the same & so did Dixon (until he got shot & killed that is).
I like it because it's a bunch of blokes messing about in classic cars and being politically incorrect to a good sountrack.
If I'm in any way representative, I don't think people want the full-on Gene Hunt, "Right, I know who I want to lock up for this, whether he did it or not" school of policing (except maybe a few wardrobe-dwellers), but do warm to the idea of having a copper and police force that puts the fear into the local scrotes.
In other words, not the full nine yards "I'm banging him up because he's a scrote, and that's all we need", but a bit of a step away from all the "rights" stuff we keep hearing about.
(And "hearing about" is half the problem, it might be nice if the media stopped trying their utmost to find stories that make police cells and prisons out to be a pretty nice place to stay, all things considered.)

I actually had some dealings with the police the other day (They werent arresting me!)Some ned had pulled a knife after I had stopped him from trying to wander out of my shop with a box of whisky (he had had decided it might taste better if it was free) They arrived quickly, took statements looked at the cctv and nicked him the next day. I cant see how an angry copper would be any better, none of the police Ive met have been apologists for scum. I think the problem is more the lack of jails and soft judges.
I also heard some of the Radio 2 bit debating this and Jeremy Vine had an ex head of the Flying squad suggesting that we need slightly more robust policing. Some left wing veggie Pol Correct idiot was dead against and tried shooting the ex down in flames.
The ex from Flying squad gave an example of knife muggings by a gang of youths and how in his day, a whole bunch of them could and would find the gang and lock them up after sufficent surveillance etc. They also were left in no uncertain terms that if they tried using the knives on the coppers then they would be restrained and any 'weapons' available to the BiB would be utilised in their restraint. He indicated that it was pretty effective and very robust policing!
The hush puppy guardian idiot from Islington said this was nonsense and didnt work then and wouldnt work now.
It is obvious which I agreed with and very amusing when the idiot was pushed (verbally!) into a corner of his own making and tied himself in knots.

Actually, now there's a policing idea!
Work out where all the, "you can't lock them up, they're trying to communicate in a confusing world" types live. Then, upon happening across a gang of miscreants who need a lesson but would just be let off by the courts, round them all up, lob them in a van and trundle them off to Happyland.
Safe bet that when HPGI comes outside and finds his bicycle nicked, his Prius missing its wing mirrors, and his organic herb garden strewn all over the pavement, he won't be thinking, "you need to find an all-inclusive, positive and healing way of communicating the importance of society to these people."
OK then fans of "Get your trousers on yer nicked" is this the sort of policing you want?
Information obtained suggesting an armed blag will occur at hh:mm dd/m/yy @ location X.
During the plod/blagger interface a known scrote gets shot and killed.
Oh bother! He didn't actually have a shooter.
Gun appears out from a first aid kit and is laid by the body, further evidence co-ordinated to support allegation that the dead scrote was an armed threat.
It really happened, and I've seen the photos pre gun/post gun.
That was the Flying Squad for you. Emphasis past tense.
Thanks but no thanks, this corner agrees with Crispy Porker.

I thought the most telling part of last night's episode -- which BTW I thought caricatured all sides for at least 30 mins -- was that Sam went back to 1973 after sitting through a 2007 policing strategy meeting.
We may not want the full-on Gene Hunt approach, but we certainly don't want our best police and detectives wasting time sitting in cross-discipline multi-agency navel-fluff-analysis meetings.

DVD, re the photos, etc, I'll get you the details and anti-corruption investigation refs in a day or so. Not to hand, but all in public domain already.
Sorry, but there were some teams in the Squad that were out right bad uns. Likewise in SE Regional CS, to name but one other.
Offset against that the vast majority that were Persil.

Just to add another thought on the question of the system going soft.
Which case was it where it was alleged miscarriage of justice occurred because scrotes a, b and c were kept in different nicks and each was told their mates were singing like canaries.
Personally, what's wrong with that? I can't see a problem frankly.
tbf iirc there was some jiggerypokery with statements, proved on improvements in forensic techniques but even so nowt wrong with the tactic.

Onto a slightly different tack - are Policemen (and yes I mean men not women) getting smaller?
When I was a lad ........... LOL
As a rule people are generally getting taller/wider/heavier built but some forces have dropped the minimum height requirement altogether.
Looking back, most 'coppers' seemed to be larger than average men with what could only be called a 'presence' - might just be my memory playing tricks.
Certainly quite a few I see these days - certainly PCSO's - seem to be somewhat less than 'hefty'.
Perhaps it's a sign of old age - not only to the police look younger but smaller as well

Thought it was common knowledge that people are getting taller? If so, then by definition, the BiB are getting taller.
This is surely opposed to the post above but then if the height limits are lower, that may explain things? But then are some small people not control freaks? If so, they will be attracted to a position or profession that they could not normally join or even be taken seriously by/in :-)
Anyway, YEs, they are getting shorter or are we all just getting grumpier and less tolerant?
My vote is that they are getting less 'powerful' or less 'authoritarian'. Therefore, weaker? What joy! Bin the PC crap and get on with policing our streets.... Anyway the guys doing the street job should have more power and trust. We have to stop this stupid scaredy pants stuff and get on with keeping the streets safe; like we would if we were in charge and wanted 'to keep the streets safe for our kids and mothers'?
No! Go further..... I do nothing wrong and am very unlikely to get 'fitted up'!

Possibly the type of gaffer we are looking for is one with a strong sense of justice that plays by the rules, knows the law but is still a bit old school.
Many of the bibs on here will know what I am talking about when I say one of my DI's decides a job needs done. If we are short of cars he hires them and incurrs the wrath of the civvies that hold the money later. He authorises o/t like its going out of fashion because he demands results to go with it. If you are on o/t and he spots you sitting on yer butt then stand by to get it kicked.
We needed an answer machine in the office. He went to Argos and bought one out his own pocket and claimed it back later.
We got held on late he buys 20 take away meals for the troops and claims it back.
On a Sunday he gives some of his shift a long lie and takes it on the chin if his gaffers want to know where people are.
If there are IT problems he goes to the top shouts a bit and gets us stuff.
If solicitors get a bit shirty with the troops he phones them and asks what kind of problem they have and they better drop the attitude or he wil deal with it.
A no nonsense gaffer who commands respect demands hard graft and rewards it.
Its his way or no way.
You fall short, your off his team for good.
But he sticks to the law.
Thats my type of Gene Hunt.
