About 5.30am witnessed a total idiot driver on my way to work in London. Blatantly speeding (I'd say at least 65 in a 40) I had to swerve to avoid him as he undertook me using the bus lane and then cut me up - however he then very nearly hit an early morning jogger trying to cross at a pedestrian crossing. Full lock up of brakes and the pedestrian literally jumping back onto the pavement - very close call. Didn't stop and just sped away.

Living in central London I see muppet driving every day and usually don't care but this guy was totally dangerous. I have his plate so the question is - is this kinda thing worth even reporting?? Would the police even bother doing anything or would this be a total waste of my time? What could they do to this guy?

Opinions appreciated.

Get it reported. Probably won't amount to anything this time, but if he/she's been reported before, or in the future...or there's CCTV of the junction in question??

I would. Perhaps someone else has also reported the same car (two or more reports may lead to the police following it up), or it may be stolen, or it may have been involved in a robbery, or he may have just done a hit and run, or he may have crashed into someone after passing you...

ETA - What tigger said... I'm so slow at posting sometimes!

Did the car have a blue flashing light on the roof?

If so we will soon get a load of subscibers explaining why the actions were completely and utterly reasonable.

report him?? nothing worse than a grass. Ok he was in the wrong but if everyone goes around reporting eachother everytime someone breaks the law, breaks a speed limit etc we would all have a criminal conviction. Just butt out and mind your own business, if he is a persistent speeder he will be caught eventually. Can you honestly say you have never in your life done something dangerous?? who knows maybe he needed to be somewhere in an emergency?? get a life! ranting

To report it you need to go to a station within 24hrs, for them to take the complaint further. This is a pain. Without other complaints (there will be none), it is extremely unlikely that there will be any further action.

Decide whether your citizenship is worth the effort of queuing up for 30 mins at your local plod-shop to report it to some probationer who doesn't know any traffic law, and who won't even get it on the intelligence database.

Do it anyway, and tell me that I'm too cynical and jaded, and my experience was a one-off.

Extremely grateful to one here who took the details further. Thanks.

Why do you have to report it within 24 hours?

I d hope you are joking!!

Imagine he had actually hit the jogger and then driven off, would you still feel the same way?

Imagine you were related to the jogger.....

If you felt strongly enough to ask us about what you should do, then it seems you feel strongly enough to want to report it.

I think you should take the Nike approach.

Just do it.

I thought so too, but the nice lady at central control was most insistent.

Agree, the guy may be a complete nut job and if he was taken to court over it your details would be given to his defence and you may well get an un welcome surprise in the early hours.

I would forget about it, unless you have nothing better to do of course, he will get caught soon if he drives like this often.

In the end just didn't have time to do anything about it - as I said I see muppet driving every day in London so not too bothered - just hope he doesn't end up killing someone...

Here in Warrington, that is actually a friendly piece of terminology.

I will always remember when I came to uni here from the south a long time ago, the first time I got off a bus the driver said "Cheers cock!"

"Nob-ed" I have found is not quite so polite here though!
