Towing car on a trailer back from Knockhill last night, and got flashed by a Gatso when doing 56 on a bit of road with 60 speed limit. They can't differentiate between an HGV, car, bike, car with trailer and flash at different speeds, can they?

I had this happen when towing a car with a DPV under 3500kg at between 40 and 50 at the Gatso on A534 Bulkeley, Cheshire. Road is NSL. I assume the larger radar echo is assumed by the machine to be a HGV.

I heard nothing.

Just for clarification did the 60 limit apply to you, ie NSL DC / motorway 60 limit with trailer, or was a it a 60 limit for cars bikes ie NSL SC and thus 50 for you?

If the latter then perhaps the back office will review the photos and take action or not depending upon their enforcement limit.

If you were indicated 56 I'd guess you'd be OK though.

Perhaps it was one of those new tailgate cameras.

Now there's an idea. Fit your car with a radar transponder and drive past at or below the speed limit. The scamera will flash and they might even send you loads of tickets ... but for a legal speed - Streaky

PS - note that operating the transponder might be an offence - S

Right then. Not that this will be a definitive answer as I'm in Midlands and you speak of Knockhill but our local scamps have recently published an enforcement protocol within which they give the following table.
The three columns are headed
A. speed limit
B. conditional offer from
C. court proceedings from
.A..B..C
30 35 50
40 46 66
50 57 76
60 68 86
70 79 96

These are exactly in line with what are often described as ACPO guidelines, though as vonhosen oft reminds us, quite corectly, that the ACPO guidelines do not say NO enforcement below the figure in column B, but that this is the level at which in the opinion of ACPO the minimum action should be a FPN.

So turning to your 56 in a 50, assuming that the 56 is accurate, and is not a "Oh Bother" look at speedo, by which time you've lifted off and braked, then you should be OK, albeit marginal.

Good luck.

Hope that helps.
