Borringly I've just had another NIP for 35 in a 30 - the third Ihve had at this breakneck speed. Its probably time to get a detector, what's the best sat nav / detector combination at the moment

Thanks

Jesus, you should be banned you nutcase!

Seriously tho'..You have been done three times at that speed?? That really sucks.

Do you think your car is being specifically targetted by talivans or is this static camera's?

I would never accept a nip at that speed, I would want proof of everything.

Same the money you intend to spend on a speed detector and teke your foot off the gas peddle. Its cheaper.

Why dont you just recommend he gets someone with a flag to walk in front as well while you are at it.

Daft.

I'd have a little bit more sympathy if he'd been caught speeding in an NSL by a Talivan, but to miss speed cameras 3 times in a 30 zone, surely an eye test would be the best recommendation. idea

I got done at 36 by a PC with a hand held detector hiding behind a bush. When they are that sneeky I don't think an eye test will be of great use.

Fair enough, I was (perhaps wrongly) making assumptions about the original posters situation. Sneaking out from behind bushes is hardly "cricket", but if the OP was done by a GATSO then perhaps he should improve his lookout. Excepting certain locations or stupidly low limits, most GATSOs seem to be decently visible now, as are the ladder markings.

Its 3 times in as many years and thankfully to differnt cameras. Two out of three are easily visible, but are on huge semi rural roads.

Anyway back to the questionn - anyone got any ideas on kit which combines detector with sat nav

Not sure about the legal aspect of radar detectors since the new RTA, but you're OK with a GPS based database such as a TomTom, as long as it's updated regularly.

Easily done I know, some years ago, I hired a small Merc fitted with a speed limiter. You got up to speed, and flicked this little lever which limited you to that speed, seemed like a good idea for town driving.

Wonder why more cars dont have it?

I have a TomTom 910 with the speed camera database from PocketGPSWorld (£2/month). I wouldn't be without it. The text-to-speech is wonderful, a major improvement on the lesser TTs (I've also had a One and 710 -- don't ask). Other SatNavs are available, but the support you get at PocketGPSWorld makes it easy to live with.

I'll second all of Peter Ward's sentiments regarding the TomTom, albeit that I have a TomTomGo 500 and not the 910. Still a good piece of kit though, very user friendly and very easy to keep the camera locations updated..

Probably worthwhile checking out the road angel navigator also.

Kinda like a dodgem? Foot to the floor but you don't exceed the limit? Must be safe then, eh?

(I know that's not what you said, but you know what I mean)

Would you have your foot to the floor because you are trying to exceed the limit? That wouldn't make good sense. It would be an aid, not something to be defeated. In a 30 you could set it at say 34 and just drive normally.

Better still, set it at 30, and drive knowing you are not (r) not going to be fined for exceeding the limit. I dont agree with all limits, but have absolutely no problem keeping to them. OK to be fair, on motorways I cruise at 80, but thats it. Keeping to the slower limits is difficult I know, up here in Aberdeen, the limit in the centre of town has been reduced to 20 yikes, now thats difficult? And we all know the other arguement, you may be the safest driver on the roads, but inadvertantly get caught for driving enough the limit to be zapped, whilst those who keep within the limit, can be the most arrogant, ignorant, dangerous unsafe, uninsured, and on occasions, not even a lcense holder, and get away scot free day after day.....

I chose 34 because I wouldn’t be camera zapped at that speed. I could be prosecuted by BiB but it isn’t likely.
People exceeding the limits can be just as dodgy as those within them.
