Do police camera vans haveto be marked? Passed one today on the A38 towards Derby from the M1. It even had a spare wheel on the back like a camper van!! Two cameras - one at the top of each rear door! Was not speeding. Does not seem like "fair sport" to me!!

Yep ANPR, there were probably a couple of cop cars or bikes up a slip road somewhere waiting for the yabba dabba do to go and pick up some uninsured scrote. A round of applause for proactive road policing.
Having said that, I went past one on the A556 at a few leptons over the prescribed limit and shat myself until I saw the plod cars parked in a side road. I still turned round and drove past a 2nd time to check it was ANPR. The coppers in the side road gave me a little wave as I trundled past (crawled past) for the second time in about a minute

At least you provided them with some entertainment. The copper's were quite possibly happy to be doing something else to enforce road safety than just catching people for trivial speeding offences.

BTW, had it been a SCamera van, would you have stopped on the second pass, in the hope of talking your way out of a fine??

Where I have seen APNR cameras in use (on M61) they had signs up saying it was a DVLA camera. And no big van, just a freestanding camera on a tripod and a little Peugeot 206 diesel. Clearly not raking it in like the scameratsi, who have expensive shiny new vans every couple of years, and can afford to repaint them periodically as part of their latest indoctrination campaign.

Automatic Number Plate Recognition.
It reads number plates, checks them with a database and if the car is uninsured/untaxed etc the police will stop it further down the road. It's often found that people driving these cars are also wanted for other things so I think that, when it's used like this, it's a good thing.

Automatic Number Plate Recognition, looks your numberplate up on the PNC and other databases to see if your car is taxed, insured, stolen, being driven by a drunk driver or murderer etc. Every single search on the PNC is logged so your movements can be put together later by anyone with sufficient motivation. Marvelous technology, never goes wrong and is a great replacement for real police.

Like the guy who was stopped in an alleged-to-be-uninsured Peugeot, the car was snatched and crushed, then it turns out it was properly insured all the time.

ASK yourself this.

Which would earn them the most money?

You have your answer.

Another Nasty Piece of Robocopping

It exists to solve a problem which is almost entirely a byproduct of the excreable SCPs and Congestion Charge.

How are the SCPs responsible for untaxed/uninsured cars?Scrotes have been getting away with this for years before the Scammeraships were thought of.

And it seems to work as well. What I don't understand is how is it practical? My mind tells me that having the car registered at a false address must have implications in terms of inconvenience when you need the V5 doc (I assume it gets sent to the wrong address), but then I thought 'When do you actually need it?'. Only for selling and tax I guess (but then why tax at all if they can't catch up with you).

Think of all the 'disposable' old/crap cars being driven around South London and other large cities, they're bought for cash for what £50, £100? And sold for cash, no V5, no insurance, no tax, oh and in the case of most of those driving them....no passport, and no residency permit.

Hmmm, what happens when a manned ANPR set up spots an unregistered car? Is it flagged up and stopped or is it allowed to go on it's way unmolested?Remember I'm talking about manned ANPR not Gatsos

Dunno, I'd assume it's the same as hooning past them at serious warp speeds; you'll find a marked Police car/bike on your heels and either a fine/bollocking or being nicked. I'm guessing nowt stops them leaving the ANPR site and quickly nicking someone if they happen to amble past.

With a proper ANPR set up they'll have this up the road

and a group of bikes further along to do the stopping.

Pusuit is given.

...but would the car have been unregistered if there were no Gatsos?

There is an ANPR van near Kingston Bridge (Surrey) parked up quite often with cameras set up, no sign of the BiB anywhere, just collecting stats? What is the point unless the offenders are pulled there and then, trying to find them later will be a waste of time, thats why they don't show up on a search.
