ITN lunchtime news, today, with Schuey and Alistair Stewart, it was stated that 70 children per week are killed on uk roads.
The only figures I could find are for 2002, KSI 4596 per annum and killed 179 per annum.
Major difference or am I missing something?

That's 70 children a week (or less, maybe, if they take a second look at their figures) who haven't had the point made forcibly enough that cars are great big hard heavy things, and children are light soft squishy things, and that to make sure the two don't mix don't walk out in front of traffic.

Or maybe it's all the drivers' fault cos they're speeding?

A good time to re-post something I wrote as an aside to another subject last week. I think it deserves a wider airing under a more suitable thread. Apologies for the duplication to anyone who's seen it before.

Just to keep my piss simmering, I have a calendar on my desk that a colleague kindly gave me.

It's a 2006 calendar that features posters, designed by primary school kids, about road safety.

As you might imagine, the vast majority (11 out of 12 I believe) carry the message "speed kills". The other one highlights the dangers of children using headphones and walking out into traffic.

It's clear to see which message the Scamera Pratnerships, in going round all the primary schools in London in 2005 brainwashing our children, put most emphasis on.

A more despicable waste of money and more outrageous example of indoctrination of such young kids, who let's face it are almost terminally receptive to messages from authority at that age, I don't think I can imagine.

In fact just thinking about it makes me ranting

That's the depths these scumbags have plumbed to try to justify their continued existence. I hope they're censoreding proud.

You're missing the point that the press dont have to bother with the truth, when sensationalism and soundbytes make better copy.

So according to AS 3640 children are killed every years on our roads

Edit, reading the BBC report it says 70 KSI not killed

Latest official figures - 2005

141 children killed
3,331 seriously injured

Of the 141 killed, 47 were child pedestrians in built up areas.

9.5 children 'killed or seriously injured' per week on British roads.

Correction: that's 9.5 per day or slightly less than 68 per week.

My educational message for my kids:

If you run into the road that car which weighs a lot more than you will kill you, so don't

I don't like the KSI figure, mainly because I don't understand it :?

How serious does injury have to be to be serious for statisical purposes?

Bring back the man in Green tights und a cod piece. lick yum

Or bring back Tufty und his club.

Hedgehogs? They have fleas after all und are a bit prickly. They not as cute as Tufty after all.

Besides.. I keep thinking of the "Keep on Truckin'" sketch of the "Not the Nine O Clock" series.

I cannot help it. That was one epic of a sketch hehe

Not quite as memorable as the PC Savage one .. but somehow ..I just cannot help it..

It depends what point the government is trying to prove/disprove really.

You watch "Not the Nine O Clock News" now (I have DVDs) and you realise 2 things:

1) BBC would never have courage to show something like that now
2) This government desperately needs something like that to point out the farce

The article on the BBC website says KSI and is clearly correct, there are NOT 70 children killed as described originally

I'm sure a correction will be broadcast in due course. On the 3am news bulletin on a Sunday morning, just to make sure nobody sees it.

If the driver in such a collision was exceeding the limit (assuming the limit wasn't dumbfoundingly low), then the act of ‘speeding’ alone could have been the root cause of the collision. However, these are few and far between; such accidents are mostly caused by inattentiveness of the pedestrian (in some cases coupled with driver inattentiveness). IMO the root cause of child pedestrian ‘error’ are their parents lack of morality but no-one does anything about this!!!

For too long individuals have abdicated their responsibility, the state then wrongly forces it upon others.

Completely agree, and the rest of my post supports that.

In fact practically everything I post in SP&L supports that.

There's just not a :tongueincheek: smiley. Although the number of times it's needed on PH, there maybe ought to be by now.

Doing a quick search shows up the following possibilities:

:-J
:-y
TIC
:J
-)
:-?

I agree we need one, and/or something that indicates sarcasm (which BTW seems to be :-] though I wasn't aware of that).
