Ch.4 - The A46
Discussion
Quite a sobering program but what struck me was the story about a guy called James Hill who killed two girls.
This guy had 6 previous drink drive convictions and was 3 times over the drink drive limit when he killed the girls..
Then recently he didn't return from a driving aware course - are we serious? Could this guy ever be entitled to drive again?

Shame the programme never bothered examining why they called it the Killer road, none of the accidents they discussed had anything to do with the road itself, jus generally bad driving.
1 drunk
1 idiot cyclist
2 cases of driving on the wrong side of the road
1 very badly driven artic
The road appears to have had no influence on these incidents.

I think the program itself made the same statement - but (and I didn't name the program!) I guess the common factor was that all deaths occured on the A46 and hence killer road. They weren't blaming the road in the program..
How/why are we getting hung up on the
ing name of the program? FFS maybe there are a higher proportion of
witted drivers in that area?

which is the complete lack of logic I'm talking about.
It's the
witted drivers killing people and zero to do with the road. It's not a killer road - you say so yourself. I'm glad we agree - but above, you say "but killer nevertheless" which is the direct opposite.
Were you having a dig at the program? If you were it didn't translate that way.

Indeed.
The programme title insinuates the road is the cause or at least has some influence on the fatalities witnessed upon it.
On broadcast however the road had nothing to do with any of the accidents discussed, in fact the lack of detail given in nearly all circumstances made it hard to have aview of each incident. IE there was no discussion of each crash scene or interviews with Trafpol, just interviews with the berieved, I fould it slightly ghoulish and the programme made no attempt to eduacate or offer ideas to make the road safer....

I didnt see the program, missed it unfortunately, so cant realy comment on the particular accidents it presented, but i have heard about the road previously.
The roads given the name 'killer road' cos although all the accidents were caused by bad driving of some sort the road perpetuates the bad traits that most drivers have. Its quite a long straight road, double carriageway in places, with few corners and very few places to pass. You can imagine therefore that its probably a very nice road to be on if ur not stuck behind a lorry, tractor or slow moving old person. In this situation you can understand people becoming impatient and attemping stupid manoevres.
The fact it is long and straight also allows very high speeds to be achieved that are not normally possible on most motorways, and it also makes driving very monotenous. Therefore the drunk driver is much more likely to crask as he has less obstacles to help him keep his whits about him.

watched about 15 mins until the end of the Drunk driver bit who killed the girls. I thought the programm was going to be about the road itself being dangerous but it was the normal emotioanl dribble and a speeding drunk driver.
Sad for the girls deaths but it was a drunk driver not the road. Hence misleeding title, lack of facts and circumstances of the crash + emotional dribble = turn over of channel.

So it was the road that bought him three double whiskys and made him drive?
Not the fact that he is a complete arse?
IMO, the less obstacles for drunks to hit, the better.....
When will someone make a decent programme about driving standards - appropriate use of lights, lane discipline, observation, etc etc? Not this emotive cock and bull that will no doubt result in calls for speed cameras on that road.

Cant see it happening unfortunately, would be nice to think someone could have the foresight to actually make aprogramme that was based on fact and attempted to eduactae
I had this argument with the wife last night. She said that at the end of the day, drinking lots and driving like an idiot is not the fault of the road. True, I said, but howcome some roads have a much higher death rate than others? Maybe they lend themselves to encouraging idiot driving? Who knows, but if some roads have significantly higher death rates, then that does need to be investigated.

Now if there were some blind off camber switchbacks, rough or loose surfaces, then you have an accident.
I have yet to see a road force someone to get in a car after getting pissed.
youll probbably hate me for saying this but its the truth.
I live just of the A46, it is like any other wide A road in the country, the bottom half has been dual carriagway'ed about 18 months ago so I doubt there are many accidents down that end anymore.
right the bit i will be hated for.
the part in the program is way out in the sticks, on the way to skegness, not wishing to tar everyone with the same brush but their are some pretty thick people on the loose up there, and not alot of common sense shared between the locals.
ive driven the A46 hundreds of times and have seen the lack of common sense many a time, in the landrover you just have to sit behind the 35mph locals on the NSL roads, you could go for an over take but you have to remember they are stuck in a timewarp up there, one which had no wing mirrors, let alone indicators.
i once went for an overtake (30mph fiat uno, elderly couple in car) as I pulled out on a straight clear part the guy driving drifted over infront of me, at the same speed, so I slipped back to see what he would do, he stayed in the opposite side as if to say dont overtake so i sat and waiting, he did move to the middle further on then further still he made a super quick right hand turn down a lane with no indication and very little bracking.
this sums up the mentality of most of the inbreds up that way, yes not all are like this but the vast magority are a bit dumb to say the least.
as before, its not the road its the idiots they let drive on them.
ohh and most of the time you dont get any bother, just numpties sitting at 35mph in a 60 which can be annoying especially if its a sunny weekend day with LOTS of traffic heading to skegness (its the only road to get to skeg, single carriageway)

I didn't see the program but WTF! How can somebody with that many DD convictions be ever allowed back on the roads? Now that is criminal...
Whilst the programme was called the killer road they stated at the end that this seemed to be an ordinary road like any other that had just seen a higher percentage of deaths, they kindda demo'd that by showing how each accident had had a different cause. Drunk Driving, Stupid Cyclist, Maniac Driver, Lorry Turning across a junction...
Apart from the maniac driver the cause was never blamed on speeding, how refreshing.
