Whoops I did it again!
Discussion
I had cause to be sat in the back of an unmarked local trafpol car today. I'd been out for a mid day hoon in my 911 and as most people would, I gave it some welly on a NSL dual cariageway. I was pulled by plod shortly afterwards, it was all business like and polite. Bib advised they had noted my silver 911 as they pulled out of a side junction and had followed me and logged 101mph. They described my driving and noted I had overtaken another car on the way. They commented, "we followed you for a while, you didn't do anything dangerous, but you exceeded the speed limit by more than 25mph so we have to take action". They offered a FPN or the option to take it to court. I tried not to look took eager as I opted for the FPN. On the whole it was delt with very politely, no patronising comments or lectures, no bollocking. They left me with the comment, "if you are going to drive a car like that then use your mirrors more".
I am guessing that they didn't have to offer the FPN but could have refered me straight to the courts where a ban and big fine would have been likely?

Really?
I would have thought that the faster you were going, the less you would want to be looking at where you have been!
Never assume that there isn't someone closing on you.
People traveling quickly behind me are far more of a risk to me than people traveling quickly infront of me.

If someone drives up my rear end when i am already speeding, i would say it was their fault!

What if it's a car thief (note the lack of the use of the word "joyrider"
trying to get away, or a Battenberg on a shout? Once I'm over the speed limit I pay an awful lot of attention to what's behind me
And the hidden side of sliproads etc... I'm old enough to remember
's favourite hiding places. I'm kicking myself really. I pride myself on my observation skills and being able to spot plod cars. All it took was some sunshine, a clear road, a 911 in need of some exercise and a lapse in concentration and I no longer have a clean license. It's probably a timely reminder to enrole on a driving course with cadence or someone similar. I'm also pleased that I resisted the temptation to undertake a BMW, instead I pulled out to lane two stayed a safe distance and waited until he moved over before pressing on. All commented on by plod.
Bib appeared to be surprised that insurance details, my ID and address of registered keeper all tied up. I guess I'm one of the honest minority that does this.
The BIbs comment on using my mirrors was a point made to emphasise that had I spotted them behind me I could have "adjusted" my speed and all would have been well.
Still a bit miffed but as somebody else stated, "I spend more money on socks".

You all miss the point...
Plod was saying watch your mirror and you'll see me next time....wasn't he?

ie if you're paying proper attention to your surroundings he shouldn't have remained unseen.Interestingly I once got pulled on a hoon, at a 3 figure speed on an empty A road.
I clocked a car pull out from a side road and backed off PDQ. said car closes in and follows for a mile or so before blues and 2's appear.
after a chat, the Cop commented that although I was travelling at a rather indecent speed, my driving appeared controlled, and the fact i clocked them as soon as they pulled out showed observtion, so I was sent on my way whichot a ticket but with a warning to slow down, and if they pulled me again it would be straight to jail don not collect 200 pounds....
seemed fair..

Indeed!
155mph doesn't always make you fast traffic.
Arbitrary limits can be dangerously deceptive.

If it's not gaining, it shouldn't be any immediate worry...

Point is, you won't know if it's gaining or it's rate of gain unless you keep checking & without doing so you can't update your driving plans.
It's easier for me to exert greater control over the space infront of me, than it is behind me, hence those behind pose more of a concern.
It's much easier for me to stop myself running into something infront than it is to stop something behind running into me.

The idea is to avoid collisions, not just to aportion blame.
"Here lies Jack, he was in the right when he died" doesn't make a headstone look any better.

Seems to be a sensible decision on both sides - it's fairly easy to spot an advanced driver or someone who's had some training over and above the mormal (i.e. cadence, bespoke driving etc) and I'd imagine that trafpol would recognise this too. Whether that influences them is another matter, but the fact that you are demonstrating safe progressive driving rather than looning about will go a long way in some cases.

Yes, but once you've established that it's not gaining there should be no reason to prioritise it...

...if they start to get closer, yes.
