02 plates on an Audi 80
Discussion
Saw an Audi 80 this morning with 02 plates on it which struck me as odd. Wiki suggests they finished in http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Audi_80 in 2000 and the amount of rust on it made it look a lot older. I stuck the full plate CV02VSX into a plate checker http://snipurl.com/1kdfu and it came up with the right car details - Audi 80E manufactured in 1990.
How can they use a plate to make an old car appear newer or am I missing something here?

Wtf the security certificate of that site is registered to www.snakeoil.dom Snake Oil CA
We were talking about a similar situation this evening actually. spotted this on eBay:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/REMARKABLE-HILL
We were wondering if: A)would it be registered on an 07 plate, B) would it need an MoT after 1 year or 3, C) would it be on the latest car tax brackets and MoT emissions levels etc? Also, if it was a year older it would be tax exempt, but on an 07 plate!?

If the car had a personal plate on it from new, which was subsequently removed in 2002, it would get an 02 plate as it would never had been issued a standard plate by the DVLA at the point of sale.
Theres one for sale either on here or on ebay which is like this.

That is remarkable, it belongs in a Museum where it will be cherished and preserved.

No it would get a plate relevant to its year of first registration

My understanding is that registration plates cannot make a car appear newer than it is. If it had been on a personal plate it would have to register on a plate from its year of first registration.
That's what DVLA say, and if you can't prove year of manufacture you get a sh1tty 'Q' plate.

I am in a similar position with my Yamaha R6.
It is a 2004 model (which was tweaked slightly for the 2005 model, and then replaced totally for the 2006 model)
Even though it is a 2004 build, as I bought it brand new and unregistered just under 12 months ago, it is on an 06 plate.
The dealer I got it from had bought a couple of dozen "end of production" 2004 models and was selling them cheaper due to the 2006 model being launched.
It is the Date of First Registration which is the key thing. I will need an MOT from 2009 (3 years after reg), not 2007 (3 years after build)
