Watching an episode of Traffic Cops has got me wondering whether police V70s are standard in the power department. I mean c.250bhp in a heavy estate doesn't seem a great deal any more. One would only have to nudge just over 155mph to stay ahead, not difficult for many cars these days.

In a straight line?
You're going to have to be pretty clever to outdrive a proper copper. And then with the helicopter, he won't even have to bother.....

Why can't you outrun a Heli? just keep the speeds over 160mph and you're away as has been demonstrated by a few people over the years

Yes, they are standard in the engine dept, but have stiffer suspension to cope with all the 'stuff' that's carried around.

I saw Clarkson evade close in missile lock from an Apache driving an Exige, but that involved a lot of turning!

I thought most cars are limited to 155 anyway?

Up-graded brakes also. The original V70, T5 was the best - not sure why Volvo messed with near perfection ;o)

Proper cars and motorbikes aren't though

Don't car thieves do this already, by stealing Evos, Imprezas etc. I remember a BiB on Traffic cops saying "When we got the Honda Accord Type R they started stealing them so they would always match us" or something to that effect.

Chopper can straight line & save a lot of time though, also doesn't have to negotiate the traffic ahead.

You don't have to be clever. You just have to possess a complete disregard for anybody's safety, including your own.

That makes it very easy to outrun a traffic car.

Yes, but that was a load of orchestrated crap with the heli trying to "go round" the track behind JC.

What it really would have done (as stated at the time) was pop up from behind some trees a mile or so away and blow you apart 2 seconds later.

On an empty, straight, road...all you need is balls and a quick car - realistically the fact that a police driver will take fewer risks makes them less likely to crash (with the bonus that they're not the one "ploughing" the way through traffic). Not that many chances to do 155mph plus in the UK I'd guess...not for very far.

I worked on the original T5s with the police and yes, they were the best.
And I chipped them up; they were good for damn nearly 170MPH with a wee bit extra boost and the limiter switched off.
I always have to smile when I hear a trafpol say, "Oh our cars are all standard"

As stated in the answers above,Helicopter will get in front as it does not have to follow the bends etc in the road,Radio other cars well in front of pursuit to intercept,Other car deploys stinger and game over.

Once asked this sort of question from a plod who in his days actually specced and bought the cars.....

after the special loom for all the comms/lights kit and so on the next most popular modification is...........

and I quote his words exactly......

"heavy duty front seats." Shame faced expression "You know!!! Canteen full English, cod & chips, doughnuts, in and out the car all day"

Sorry fellas, don't shoot the messenger. hehe
