I've been thinking (yes it hurt). With ANPR cameras being rolled out all over the country it begs a question. If they can ead a numberplate (which they can), they can surely put a vehicle in a position at a certain time. Two readings will give you two postions, hence a distance and a time, giving you the vehicles speed.

Now i believe i read somewhere that the ANPR camera's are not type approved for this, but could they become type approved? Are we having road pricing (& long distance average speed monitoring) introduced by stealth?

I've heard that when the M60 was widened a couple of years back, toll charge systems were installed at the same time (or at least the cabling and accessories for it) in readyness. This, well before the scheme was mooted.

So you tell me.

I noticed yesterday that the short-stay car park barriers at Stansted print your registration number on the ticket.

I'd really like to know to what purpose they're using this information.

To stop you giving your ticket to someone else if you have unexpired time on it when you leave?

To prevent someone stealing your car?

Strange how my numberplate becomes PI55 0FF when I have to type it into one of those machines...

The clocks at the moment on the ANPR system etc are all locally set, so unless we get the time all hooked up together it is not going to happen in the near future.

Certainly not the case on the ANPR system my company has developed; they're all hooked up to an atomic clock.

A friend works as a QS at Gatwick and has been involved in the project putting the ANPR camera in there and they've been very successful in catching serious criminals apparently.

There's just a niggling at the back of my mind that in 5 or so years, someone in Government is going to turn around and go, 'Ooooh, well i never! You won't believe what else the ANPR cameras can do...'
