showing my country-bumpkin innocence here, I have never seen forward facing cameras before - there are at least 2 cameras in Portsmouth 'historic' centre; at what speed and at what distance away do you trigger them?

They're called Truvelo cameras and they are activated when you cross the series of wires set into the road and a photo is taken when you hit the white lines. Both sets of lines are clearly visible. Not sure of what speed they are activated at.

clearly visible?

There was I, spending 90% of my available brainpower keeping my P&J from hitting the other more randomly piloted mummywagons and oap-mobiles as they wandered from one side of the dual-carriageway to the other, negotiating a gentle curve in the road; and the remaining 10% spotted the yellow box ahead... but I saw no lines - maybe they were covered by other vehicles?

Dang.

If it was the first time you've seen a Truvelo camera then you were probably looking at the camera itself.

Next time you see one, and Hants is littered with them, look for 3 or 4 fine dark lines across the road and then 3 white lines. They are obvious once you know what you are looking for, but you will always see the camera first.

Don't forget to smile if you're caught

There's far more than two, and they sometimes turn them to be rear facing.

They've generally placed them where you're very unlikely to approach the speed limited unless it's the early hours. silly

There is a simple solution to avoiding these specific cameras. Don't go to Portsmouth.

It wasn't my idea.

And I'm sure you've all seen this, but it still makes me laugh....

"Umm Qasr is a town similar to Southampton", UK Defence Minister Geoff Hoon told the House of Commons yesterday.
"He's either never been to Southampton, or he's never been to Umm Qasr", said one British soldier, informed of this while on patrol in Umm Qasr. He added: "There's no beer, no prostitutes, and people are shooting at us. It's more like Portsmouth."

OI I live here mad

Actually I agree laugh

The Truvelos: you can't miss them when they are triggered (I've seen many of them go off many times). If you're being naghty, they will flash when your front wheel is between the three painted white lines (as trekkie man pointed out).

There's a Truvelo there...

Plus, it runs through Portsmouth, even if you include Milton as part of Southsea. Hence, the welcome to Portsmouth signs on it.

So they flash even in bright daylight (like today) if triggered?

Well, you certainly can't miss it, even when you're 100m before the camera. The flash will seem pinkish (not white like a gatso).
