We have just had a bloke around my parents house - he is getting names for a petition to train local residents up to use a speed gun and report the car numbers to the police.
Anybody heard of this?

Yes.

The busybodies are happy that they think they can make a difference, the people they do catch they cant prosecute, the propaganda train keeps running, the busybodies get bored, and normal life resumes.

It depends on your idea of fun really!

Here's a thought, join up.

1) Then you'll have a device to play with and demonstrate how shit the accuracy is.

2) Then you'll be able to be a mole and show how unobjective these muppets are.
as in,
a) 48 in a 30, oh but it's the Major, always stands his round I'll have a word up at the golf club, or not.
b) It's that nasty youth in the sports car, look how fast he sounds to be going, err it's only 29 in a 30, oh bugger, put him down for 39, he nearly ran over my cat.

3) sure as eggs are eggs you'll catch the biggest local moaners about speeding and thus be able to expose them as utter hypocrites

4) Put the organisers number down on the report sheet, especially with a suitable corroborating note. ie 39 in a 30, must have been in a hurry as isn't it his legover night with Mrs X from the Womens Institute?

Oh I'm a bad boy.....

Or alternatively members of the community fed up with people behaving in an anti-social manner by thinking that they can drive at whatever speed they deem suitable, irrespective of what the posted maximum says.

Apparently when these things are set up in villages most of the people they catch are locals!

These so called Community Speed Watch schemes concern me - too easy for abuse to creep in, IMO..

Whilst I can't see prosecutions succeeding purely on evidence provided by these hairdryer wavers, it does concern me that drivers could be targetted for action through Section 59 PRA - potentially on the basis of inaccurate, dubious or just downright vindictive evidence..

Unlikely though isnt it? I think FiF is closer to reality.

Surely it's a foolish idea to put speed guns in the hands of poorly trained civilians....

Too late, they already did, and they pay them!

Unfortunately, we have the problem that the vast majority of people are unable to accurately judge speeds (after all, you need Scam training to be able to do that ) and they will justify any action they wish to take, or want taken, by totally irrational statements. Examples follow:

1. A guy who I usually get on well with was campaigning a couple of years ago for a 40 limit outside his house (on the outskirts of a village). He told me, and I quote: “They come out of the 30 limit, put their foot down, and come round that bend doing 80” As an experiment I drove out of that 30 limit and hit the floor – at 54mph recorded I hit his bend, and that was probably too fast in truth – anybody actually taking that bend at 80 would have nooked a half day out with the undertaker ...

2. On another thread this week we read of campaigners complaining about “HGVs coming through our village at night doing 80” Presumably, they stop down the road first and take the governers off ….scratchchin

3. Jeremy Vine show last year – numpty being interviewed about speeding down his 30- limited road. “Yeah," he said, “they come down here during the day doing 50, in the evenings its 60 or 70, at night 90 to 95” A very astute individual indeed if he can tell the difference between 90 and 95 .. scratchchin

laugh They tried that in a village near us, the fine upstanding members of the community soon found out that those 'people' were themselves. The CC deemed the idea a bad un as it tended to tear the community apart

So apart from all the "apparently they are locals" rhetoric, where "apparently" means that someone said it somewhere on PH, what would you do if you lived somewhere where you felt that the speed some people drove at was dangerous?

I live around a green with a very narrow road around it and no pavements. It is a private road but still gets people driving down it very quickly. There is an (unenforcable) 15 mph limit posted. It's about the right speed to give safe stopping with the distance/visibility.

I don't car who it is, whether residents, visitors, the posty or plod. I have got no idea whether they are driving at 30 or 50, I just know it's way above the speed that I consider safe.

Over to you, what's the answer to my problem?

It's possible, but there again local residents are funny people. There was a fuss where I used to live about 'speeders', and they set up a speed-trap.

Know who they caught??

Yup: All the locals

I witnessed a lunatic resident the other day, coming from an NSl to a 30 in a 911 at a good lick of 60mph (gps) then before the signs stood on the brakes to get 30 (gps) before crossing the 30 limit sign.

The enraged resident who decided I must have been speeding then reversed out of his drive into my path (1st infraction), then he went at 15mph just to hold me up (2nd infraction), and when I overtook him at 25mph he beeped away at his horn (3rd infraction).

About a week later a policeman appears on that stretch of road with a speedgun. Didn't get me of course because I don't speed through that village (they have a '30 reminder sign' that I also always fail to trigger - the old duffer could have noticed that), so the enraged guy obviously made a fuss about me.

So me: No speeding at all, resident, 3 infractions in 100yards. Go figure rolleyes

Way above the speed that you consider safe for what?

On a recent merry drive down a local lane in wet weather, I came across a couple of ramblers walking in the road. Upon seeing my car appear from around the blind corner, they leapt onto the verge whilst shouting obscenities at me ("going too fast", etc). The fact that I came to a complete and controlled halt a good 10 metres ahead of where they had been standing went unnoticed. I gave them a quick smile and cheery wave and I was on my way.

It always looks faster and and more "dangerous" from the pedestrian's point of view (but understandably so).

Way above the speed where one could stop in the distance that one could see to be clear - basic driving criteria. That's a judgement that most drivers could make, but a lot don't. They work on the basis that it couldn't happen to them.

Can you do a stint near where I live please, I was stopped at a roundabout on a T junction waiting to turn right, there was a guy in a black Micra who was coming from the right wanting to go straight on and straight pass my car. Not sure how fast he was going all I know is my car shook from the turbulance created as he passed me. I'm just glad I saw him first!!!

I'm trained at using one of these for my local community! Goes alongide a SID radar.

Thought I'd go undercover, and the results are shocking!!!!!! I have many many examples to share if wanted ....

I joined 'cos lots of people speed through my village. Not a problem in itself, but the only way to get out of the village is a T-junction onto this road which is blind both ways, so even if traffic adhere to 30mph it is pretty dicey getting accross. If traffic is doing 40-50 then its a serious accident waiting to happen.

The idea is great, but in practice its a joke.

Why not apply for a set of traffic lights?
