I'd like to assist the Road Safety Partnership by fitting my vehicle with a warning device if I'm entering 'accident' blackspots of the sort inhabited at the time by mobile speed camera vans conducting survellance of the general public. i.e. some sort of RADAR (or whatever they use) detection system. I'm not particularly interested in the fixed cameras since I can see them. Is this legal? What should I fit? Where do I get one?

You are now no longer allowed to "detect" accident black-spots (AKA a RADAR Detector) and now have to rely on a system that checks your location against a list of possible accident black-spots. (AKA a GPS system)

That's a bore. Every time I drive anywhere these days I'm spotting 'safety' vans or policemen hid behind phone boxes trying to catch me speeding. At this rate, one is bound to succeed!

I thought they were due to be outlawed in the last Parliament but they ran out of time to hear the Road Safety Bill?

well if road angels website is current:

They still sell them with a note about possible law changes.

Its all worth noting that your local constabulary should list where all their permanent cameras are and where their mobile units will be that week, some websites are better than others.

Thanks Threesixty, I'll talk to them about selling me something suitable and take my chances on future improvements to the law that is applied to the general public later. Presumably this is the sort of kit the French Police go mental about, so I'll remember to remove it before any travel through France.

If I'm ever elected to the Houses of Parliament or join the Police I shouldn't think I'd need to worry about such 'guilt projection / transference' laws any more, although a Sunday papers exposure will probably make my career in public service short lived.

Bloody Hell! I've just noticed I've become one of the ton-up boys posting on 100 threads in a mere 17 months! I'll soon be catching up with the OCD crowd with four-figure-postings to their names. Err, in 153 months time. Then I'll start every reply with: "so you're new around here... etc."

There both not ilegal

7-4-05
It has been announced that the new Road Safety Bill will be dropped.

5-12-04
Within a year radar and laser detectors could be illegal. Here's the government's own wording:

The Road Safety bill is no more.
The Road Safet Act received Royal Assent on 8th November 2006.

Under Section 18 they will be outlawed.
That hasn't happened yet, but will when the Secretary of State announces commencement via Statutory instrument.

We'll have to get ourselves a Secretary of State first...

So given radar detectors are no longer going to be legal, we might as well go the whole hog and buy laser jammers.

Seriously, are they ever going to step into the realms of increasing safety or are they simply going to pursue this moronic line until everyone's dead?

I thought that radar detector ban had not passed into law yet.

Arrive Alive in Wales say they will no longer be telling the public where to expect them. Oddly, I often found their published list of locations were not always adhered to. They said they may have to "change the daily locations for operational reasons"

What reasons could they be?

The published lists that are supposed to indicate where the scammers are likely to lurk were all spin anyway. I've seen many scam vans that were not present on the partnerships' websites. When I wrote and queried this the response was that there is no requirement to publicise them, operational reasons, or special requests for deployment from a local council.

The idea that all locations are published is just another attempt to find favour with the public. I don't know anybody who finds favour with the scammers.

Scam vans are creatures of habit - their greed is their own undoing in many ways. For this thread, their greed dictates that they will always circulate amongst the highest earning spots - not the highest accident spots.

Hence we, the general public, learn where they are, and subscribe to GPS POI lists and update them - and win smile

OK the wallet alarm has been disabled. Can anyone advise which is the best system to buy? Seems I need RADAR and laser detection, but I don't want lots of false alarms. I wouldn't object to using a jammer if they're legal too.
