I didn't get all the details, but it seems that a nine person car theft ring was found guilty and sentenced today.
These people had stolen, IIRC, at least 300 expensive cars and then changed the cars' identities to those of Continental wrecks.

That's no shock. The grimmer part of the report was that amongst the nine criminals were a trainee from the Hendon Police, and an employee of the DVLA.

Won't it be great when bureaucratic insiders will be able to access all of anyone's data from a single source? Roll on ID cards!
Want the address of the RK of any reg plate in the UK? No probs.
Like to know someone's financial details and PIN code? Step into my office...

Ah, now there's a deterrent:-

- Accessory to car theft on a grand scale: Token slap on the wrist;
- Shoplifting: Being made to promise you won't do it again;
...any more gems this week from our 'tough on crime' government?!? rolleyes

And to think that the police service is now focusing on volunteers to do a whole range of tasks in police stations. My C/Supt wants me to take on a volunteer in my dept and I deal with a particularly sensitive area of work. I feel as if I'm the only one who questions the motivation of these "volunteers." If you had criminal links, working FT is a bit of a pain isn't it, but if you could volunteer a day a week? Easy!
