question for the BIB
Discussion
question for the BIB here.
this happened to me yesterday and got me a wonderin'
driving on a dual carriageway in lane 2 at 80 (in lane 2 because slip road enrty merges with lane 1 at this point so moved over to let anyone joining to do so unimpeded).
two cars blast down the slip road and between me in lane 2 and slower car in lane 1 - approx 4 car lengths difference between slow car in 1 and me in 2. neither cars indicate at any point during the manourve and both floor it when they hit the clear road ahead of me.
first car was a private plate, BMW Z4 with the top down and two blokes aboard. second car was an x plate Ford fiesta 3dr with 4 up. i had time to note both plates whilst cars were ahead of me.
so if i'd been traffic on duty in unmarked car - who do i chase? leader or follower - bearing in mind they both completed the same moves at the same speed and were exceeding the speed limit the whole time? the BMW was pulling away from the Fiesta when they disappeared from view.
just interested to hear the rationale of the BIB of who to stop and who to chase up later.

It is difficult to pull 2 vehicles safely at once especially on a dual carriageway. Not quite so difficult on a motorway where there is obviously plenty of space if there is a hard shoulder but still has issues regarding safely stopping them together at the same point. Personally, I would go for the front one having passed the rear vehicle and making him aware in no uncertain terms that he had been caught.
If it was not safe to stop both together or one of them did not understand the intention to get them to pull over, then an NIP would follow with the necessary enquiries at a later date. Bearing in mind that most Roads Policing vehicles have on board video, as I pass the one who is not going to be stopped, capture the drivers image on the video system.
Stopping two vehicles at once usually looks like and is a bit of a 'pigs ear' (no pun intended), especially if the drivers concerned are not on the ball and many of them are not!

Not sure if this is a myth or not, but it was reported that a bike and a couple of cars (or vice versa) were going at a fair rate on a motorway, so the police overtook them and stopped the traffic ahead of them completely so they could book all of them. Not sure how true, but I wouldn't be surprised.
