Just heard on local radio, our CC, Medddd Hughes, now standing in Brunstrom's old boots at ACPO, has announced his desire to hide speed cameras.

I would hazard a little bet that Brunstrom is leaning on Hughes, after the Mad Viking's blog revealed that North Wales is doing well with road casualties, while South Yorkshire isn't...

I feel a letter to the local rag coming on...

Aren't cameras supposed to flag black spots to drivers, Mr Hughes...?

Current cameras don't catch outlaw drivers with cloned plates, so how will hidden cameras improve the situation, Mr Hughes..?

Government tells us most casualty accidents are caused by inattention. Your hidden cameras will make drivers devote even more attention to searching for hidden cameras. How will you explain the extra casualties that this generates, Mr Hughes...?

What do you plan to do about social unrest when those two million people get the final flash that gives them a totting up ban and public transport can't cope with them, Mr Hughes...?

Are you suffering from brain fade, Mr Hughes..?

Wouldn't like to have them but they do make more sense and would be more effective at encouraging drivers to keep to the speed limit.

Do you agree with it all then?

Mind you, I always drive with the assumption that some little shit will be lurking behind a bush trying to nab me! Just an extension of basic observation skills.

Well, the reply you will get to you're question will be 'keep within the limit, then you wont have to worry about looking for the cameras'.

Its all too easy for people to rant at the Police, but at the end of the day we don't take action against people who drive within the law. It just seems that on here people see it as a given that they can moan and gripe about getting caught out. Yes it ruins your day for sure, but that's life....I get more ear ache from people committing traffic offences than I do from people I'm locking up for burglary, assault, theft etc etc who are going to be remanded.

At the end of the day you cant complain about something that's going to be enforcing laws, you wouldn't moan about CCTV on a dark alley to stop people getting mugged?.

I know this is all very dull, and I'm guessing its not the kind of reply you wanted but I just think its what you'll hear back and could save you the time and hassle of sending a letter and getting no reply ( likely, depending on your force area)

I'm also aware that I'll more than likely get flamed for this reply, but my original was a tad brief to say the least as I needed to get some dinner on the go.

They sure do, or they do in the area I work. If there's a problem area/hotspot, be it vehicle crime, antisocial behaviour or street crime we get our boys to pop up a camera. If people do still offend then we hopefully have the evidence to take action against them.

With CRASBO's and ASBO's as well its even better, once we know who's offending (thanks to cameras)we can do all sorts.

Does the amount of muggings drop or is the problem moved somewhere else?If it's moved then what? More cameras?Where does it end?

There's no limit like a bad limit! Set too low and/or enforced because of incidents not caused by speeding. There's a lot of these - they stand out! Tantamount to extortion!!

I don't confuse the police with the camera partnerships!

Yes they drop, because the people who commit them realise its not worth it or get prosecuted and dealt with accordingly.

I take your point as to 'where does it end', and hopefully its a safer place for all to be. Sure there are crims that move onto a new area, but from my experience the pikeys cant move areas as they're living in a free council house. If they offend they get CRASBO'd up, which means we can pretty much dictate what they can and cant do. I've just read up on one in my area for a persistent car thief, hes not not allowed in any vehicle unless its an ambulance or a police car pretty much. He's not allowed in certain areas unless its to see probation or a doctor, which has to be pre booked. If hes caught in breach of that then he gets nicked, they do work to be fair.

We're not all out hiding behind bushes! wink

Hmm, perhaps, I'd rather see limits than speed bumps though which are doing a great job of removing the floor pan on my car around here. 30mph limits with humps that destroy your car if approached at anything over 5mph.

I think you'll find many on here have a similar viewpoint! Personally I like driving in North Yorkshire - a lot of traffic police, no cameras, a little discretion in enforcement and people driving normally rather than with the tension felt elsewhere. They also have one of the best accident records in the country. I hear Durham is good as well but a bit too far for a day trip!

Don't get me started on humps though!

I have the misfortune to live 4 miles from the most central point of the UK, hump central, very annoying.

If the council carry on the way they are and hump the road leading to my road I cant get my car out onto the main roads to go anywhere. Had a planning notice come out a month or so ago to ask peoples opinions on traffic calming in the area, needless to say I poo poo'd every single one of them with humps involved.
I wonder what I could do if they did hump the roads around here, rendering my play car useless?!.

Trouble is that the majority of humps cause damage and unnecessary (and critical) wear to vehicles at considerably under the speed limit. I wonder how many accidents are cause by defective vehicles? scratchchin How many of these accidents are used to justify lower speed limits or more rigid enforcement?

It would certainly be interesting to find that one out.

I suppose those who complain about people dangerously slamming on the anchors for the cameras will be happy though.
