Whilst giving a lesson today, we turned left off the main road and parked in the junction was traffic bib. My first thought was, what a stupid place to park. They were 4-5m from the line and in the middle of the left side of the road.
We stopped further along to do a 'turn in the road' and headed back to the junction. We then had to drive on the wrong side of the road to exit the junction because of bib. As the main road was extremely busy,we had to stop. I was explaining to the learner the danger we were in because of BiB parking and shook my head as if to say-you shouldn't be parked there. Before we had time to set off, bib driver tooted his horn and waved us not to go. He approached my side and said:

"Is there a problem with how I have parked?"

Well of course there is, you have forced us to be on the wrong side at a junction. I answered politely.

"Well you don't know why I have parked here so I think you should keep your oppinions to yourself"
He then walked back to his car.
Now I am all for BiBs having special dispensation, but do it safely please.

Another lowering of opinion about the Bib from a young impressionable driver

His impression would depend on whether you went away muttering what an idiot BiB was, or whether you explained that you were wrong to shake your head because you had no idea why BiB had done it but he would have had a good reason.

I may not have known why he was there but I was not wrong to shake my head. The BiB are allowed to do many things on the road that I am not, but that does not include putting me in danger. In my professional opinion, thats what he had done. If another car had entered the junction without looking properly, then they would have hit us.

bandit Sounds like another 'turn in the road' was required.

Whether BiB had a good reason or not, he was still causing an obstruction it seems. Is there a good reason to cause an obstruction? If there is a good reason to park that far from the kerb, perhaps blues would have been appropriate and polite? Topton was correct to demonstrate that to the learner IMO.

Whatever his important reasons were, they were obviously less so than wasting his time demonstrating the length of his truncheon to you!

you could argue that you put yourself and your pupil in un-neccesary danger by returning to the hazardous junction. you knew the junction was dangerous yet you chose to return to it.was there no other route away from that road?

the road we turned into is about 1/2 mile long and a dead end. It is popular with instructors and examiners because it is so quite.
As we approached the junction on the main road, before we entered i saw bib and thought he was geting ready to exit. it was only once we turned into the road did I realise he was 'parked'.

So I would not intentionaly put anyone at risk if it could be avoided. We had no option but to turn around as planned.

Not meant as a BiB bashing thread, just my observations of bad policing on this occasion.

how can you say it was bad policing when you don't know the reason why he was parked there?

Because it is bad policing. The reason why he parked in the middle of the road only he will know, but whatever that reason there is no excuse to do so without at least putting a blue light on or a couple of cones out. You can't just park up in the middle of a lane near a junction and not expect public to be annoyed.

How I miss the so called 'rude' BIB in the UK. OVer here in Greece they do the most unbelievable things-driving in the hard shoulder with no lights on, jumping lights without sirens or lights, parking illegally to go the kiosk for smokes etc, or just driving along with the blues flashing for no particular reason causing confusion as to wether they want to pass you, slow you down, stop traffic etc.. Although i think it just me that notices the blues as everyone else here just seems to ignore them!

Anyway, my point is the BIB in UK are great compared to what I am seeing here. I almost miss them!

Although I have to agree that he was a bit of a knob to come over and give you a snotty comment. He is in a position of power nad should show better self control. If he really had a good reason to park there he should have explained. At the end of the day he is accountable for what he is up to.

Like BG says, shaking you head brings out the worst in some people with small bits....

A nice letter to the Chief Constable should solve why he was parked there and why he was a bit abrupt about it - I'm sure you got his number, didn't you?

Had you stopped to consider for one minute that he may actually have been parked over a huge crater in the road left by aliens? Well, had you?

I bet you feel silly now, don't you biggrin

If that were the case, he could have turned on his blues.

A certain person would probably suggest that you stop and assess the situation. Always expect the unexpected etc and then move on. Only problem I see here is one of inconvenience and I get that daily. It's a sign of the times on our roads.

If he was parked there watching for something special-crim flying by or chav with too loud an exhaust then he could have done all that from an extra few metres back and nearer the curb, consideration to others springs too mind.

I never really thought about getting his number, even though he was a bit short (in manner not height). I found it more funny than anything else that he would react in such a way. Almost like---oops, I am in the wrong so I will bite first
