my mum sent me some horrific pictures of a crash. it was a GTI traveling at 200 KPH into a lorry. yep messy to say the least.

anyway, got me thinking. does speed kill. or is it the driver.
- a gun doesnt pull the trigger a human does
- speed doesnt chose to travel at pace the human does

i suppose they will never slow down or stop the rate in which people die on the roads. with more people driving on the roads every year the death toll must rise too

is it right to speed

would there be less deaths if every oen stuck to the limit.
or is it that people who dont observe who cause the crashes

Usually it's lack of oxygen to the brain that kills.

IMO tail gating, maouvering without checking the mirror, having you rear view obstructed by objects in the car, falling asleep at the wheel, being distracted and not looking at the road...all cause crashes.

I think speed is rarely if ever the cause, it meerely worsens the results.

If speed kills why dont people just die when they get to that particular speed?

Trains, planes etc go fast or can do, but dont end up killing people as a result.

I would suggest inappropriate speed is a factor in killing someone, not speed absolutely.

Speed is simply part of a recipe that can end in death.

Other ingredients inlcude poor driving, bald tyres in the wet, diabolical braking and making silly hand/wrist movements in the rushing air when your arm is out of the window - to name a few.

Any combination of these can result in an accident. One factor cannot take sole blame.

That is bad.

Similar to something I saw on the A40 2-3 years ago.

Speed doesn't (often) lead to accidents but it does make them a lot more serious when they do happen. Thus the two camps, the "we can make accidents less serious by slowing everyone down" camp and the "we avoid accidents by driving better" one.

This is true. Speed doesn't kill, but going too fast definitely makes it worse when things do go pear-shaped, whatever the cause of the crash.

Personally, I don't drive very fast because I work on the (usually correct) assumption that everyone else on the road is stone cold stupid and will try and drive in to me at any opportunity.

You sure? It looks more like a softroader to me.

Millions of people every day prove that simply exceeding the posted speed limit doesn't kill.

As has already been said, inappropriate use of speed will see you off your mortal coil pretty rapidly. i.e. 100 MPH in driving rain and limited visibility is pretty stupid as is approaching a sharp bend at the same speed, but intelligence and education should teach you that this isn't appropriate. However 100 MPH on an uncongested, warm, dry and straight motorway in an appropriate vehicle isn't unsafe IMO, as long as you understand your vehicle and don't get complacent.

If by "stuck to the limit" you mean "drove at or below the limit" then I disagree. I'd say "yes" and "yes". If you mean "always drove everywhere at the limit" then i'd agree that the answer is "no" and "yes".

On empty roads it's always (a bit) safer to be driving at 70 then 100mph. Just as it's always safer to be stationary than at 20mph. The crucial thing to my mind is that on an empty road you're only going to kill yourself.

Driving at 100mph can be perfectly safe as long as nothing goes wrong but, having had a blow out at about 70mph, I'd damned glad I wasn't doing 100 at the time.

Limits are arbitrary, are frequently set completely inappropriately, and take no regard of road conditions, they are a priori almost always wrong. They serve no useful purpose in terms of safety.

ah yes, good old deceleration trauma, or the steel and plastic overdose, either one can kill.
