Hello gang,

Been staying at my girlfriend's parents this weekend doing a spot of house sitting. I was taking the chance to do some work on my MOT failiure car which has a re-test on Tuesday. I was returning at around lunch time from getting some parts for the car when some idiot cut me up on a roundabout after getting himself in the left turn lane and wanting to go straight on, (i was in my g/f car, not my MOT failiure). The whole incident happened at 15mph ish.

I sounded my horn at the guy to try to let him know what he had done. And he decided to stop dead in the road ahead of me and get out of his car. He stood by his car and starting shouting at me about the incident. I pointed out politely what i thought he had done and after seeing he was not going to back down i drove around the car to the left (in some road-side parking space) and proceeded off home.

Anyway, returning home today and the neighbours are around telling me that the police came round yesterday afternoon and this morning when i was not in!

My question is, would the police respond to the above story if the guy has reported me for the above? It all seemed a bit of a non-event to be honest, but now i'm worried i'm in some sort of trouble. I called the local cop shop but they were useless and said there is no way they would know if i was being paid a vist, and just that they will catch up with me if they want me?!

Your advice would go some way to putting my worried mind at rest!

I would not worry that much about it to be honest. If the police do want to talk to you they will catch up with you but if it is that importent to them i would have thought they would have left a note with contact details to get hold of them.If the bloke has reported it to the police then give them your side of the story and i can not see how you could be held to blame as you did not get out of the car and start shouting and the fact you drove off as well.

No.

If anything, I'd say the bloke was the one who should be worried. Sounds like you averted a road-rage incident to me - instigated by him, not you. Unless using your horn to let him know of your presence (a la the highway code) is now a highly dangerous (think of the children) offence.

Maybe he reported you to the police as a possible illegal/unlicenced driver?

(Not saying you did anything bad, but he maybe thought you did.)

Possibly when the police chased it up they found the car to be unMOTed?

Was the "left turn lane" he was in a mandatory left turn lane, or just simply the nearside lane ?

The horn is to let him know you are there where there is doubt/danger, but by the sounds of it you were using it as a rebuke. Because you say "to let him know what he had done" i.e. post incident.

Thanks for the advice. I didn't word it very well above, but the car without an MOT was on axle stands on the drive at the time! I was in my girlfriends car, which is fully road legal and i am named on the insurance!

Hi von, i knew that you would post at some point! Very glad you have. Yes, the left turn lane was mandatory, it is left turn only with the right hand lane being a mandatory "straight on" (there is no right turn on the roundabout).

The horn bit, i must admit i was a little late on the horn as i had to swerve a little to avoid him cutting me up. So as i sounded my horn he had got 4 or 5 meters infront of me! We were some 100-200 yards up the road before he stopped in the road though, and i only used the horn for one short "toot" and a wave of the head!! In hindsight i regret sounding my horn and if i had the incident again i would just take evasive action and go on my merry way thinking that i'll be happy as long as i don't drive like that!!

Thanks to all who have posted so far, i'm not so worried about the incident now. Who knows, as suggested above it may be some busy body reporting both of us.

If it was your GF's car why would the BiB be looking for you? Presumably you live together so they have your address, but they would only have her name, Shirley?

I assume that our erstwhile BiB paid enough attention at Hendon to work out that as the other party reported a male driving, that it may not have been the OP's girlfriend that was involved...

True, and it isn't too far fetched to think that they might have worked out who else lived there but sending BiB round for a minor use of the horn seems a bit OTT.

I'm still waiting for Eltax to deny his girlfriend is called Shirley though...

Well guys, stayed in all evening yesterday, had lots of work to do. No BiB visit and the neighbour over the road who was in with her kids all day said they had not been round whilst i was at work...

As for the point about me driving my G/F car. I'm named as the only additional driver on her insurance and we do live together. So the BiB would know that i'ts likely that i was the male driving.

Wait and see what (if anything) occures, all very very mysteruous though!
