Just double checking for a friend. Im 90% certain its ok to drive with an expired MOT to take to garage for MOT, and doesnt invalidate insurance or anything silly... (not planning to drive round until caught - 1 trip direct to garage where car booked in...)

cheers

Yes completely OK for a person with a valid licence drive an insured car without MOt or VED to a pre-booked MOT test.

It is also completely OK, if the vehicle should fail, to drive the same vehicle away to a place of repair, which can include the home driveway.

It is also legal to drive the vehicle to a pre-booked place of repair.

What FiF said yes

Just to be sure, when you book in at the garage make sure they record the vehicle number plate with your name, then if you do get stopped the garage have a record.

Important to note that you must be driving direct to the MOT test centre as well,no good living in London, and driving to an MOT test station in Battersea via Glasgow! as if.

Having said that i'm sure it would be legal to drive directly from London to Battersea for a pre-booked test.

I recently drove 80 miles to my MOT test happy in the belief my interpretation of the rules was correct.

hehe

Point is, there's no mileage limit on the trip to the MOT centre.

I drove from Edinburgh to Reading last month for exactly that reason (I couldn't get one booked in up here but needed the car down south anyway for a few days)

I think your absolutely right, but the definition of driving "Directly to" the MOT station has some legal bearing on it.

I see no reason why you cant live in Inverness, and book an MOT in Lands End, and drive down for the MOT, but you cant book an MOT in Lands End if you live in London, and drive there via Inverness?

Surely, Shirley, you'd have to have a reasonable excuse why you needed to travel a goodly distance to get an MOT?

eg I used to take my old VW split to an MOT station some distance away because the tester knew his way round Veedubs and was able to spot things that had escaped my eye, not often as it happened, but mainly because he didn't raise issues that experience had shown other MOT stations had raised just because they didn't know their way round the model.

Dont know, maybe there is something in the "small print" in the law, but I was always of the opinion that yo could drive you car to an MOT testing station for a pre booked MOT without being taxed, maybe Von will put us right on this? Your reason seems perfectly OK to me.
